i have a stainless steel tank but it does not have a gauge, is it hard or safe to drill a hole with the tank in place as the tank is very awkward to get at . any plan bs.
If it has an inspection / access port .... can you change / alter that to fit a gauge ? instead of drilling the tank - which if St. Steel will be hard work.
In the good old days we used a wooden dip stick and poked it down the filler hole. I still use this myself, refined with some marks scratched on to it to indicate fuel quantities. It is enviromentally friendly, consumes no electricity, and requires no wiring.
Well do not drill if you use petrol. You will not be around to install the gauge then.
Diesel is possible. Drill slow and lubricate with oil. I had to this to get an access hole to clean the tank.
I endorse jollyjacktar, but instead of a stick which will absorb the fuel, where do you stow a stinky stick!! Use a GRP sail batten mine cost just a pound at a boat jumble
I dimly remember a similar thread where someone suggested a T piece in the outlet hose and a length of clear pipe up the side of the tank with a valve in the top. This avoids any drilling.
