No. There are two different standards (sometimes known as "American" and "European") and you have to have the sender and gauge both using the same one.

I can't remember now which way round it is, but one has maximum resistance as full, the other as empty.

You need to replace either the gauge or the sender to match the type of the other.

The needle goes too full scale if the sender unit is open circuit or a wire may have come off.This is on the European version.

You've got me confused now.

Is that the same reason when I sail into the Northern Hemisphere I have to turn my compass around so that it points to the equator?
