I want to sail away from bradwell this weekend and come back on monday evening. Will be with family in a 27ft yacht, so nothing too strenuous. Can anybody recommend a route with good places to visit in the evenings. I am new to the area with my first boat!!!

Many choices:
a short, scenic hop up between mersea and brightingsea, up to wivenhoe or alresford, but check carts for depth etc.
A free-er sail up past clacton, frinton, walton.
Or go down to burnham.
Going up river to Maldon probably to short a trip if want to be out 'til Monday

Depends where you want to spend the night and whether you can dry out and whether you are towing a dingy.
Nothing at Alresford - and dries completely.
Sailing club pontoon at Wivenhoe - but dries - nice pubs, chipper, indian etc
Brightlingsea - visitors pontoon is probably the easiest as you should float at all times.
Tollesbury is pleasent - Marina based.
Maldon town quay is also good.
If you are being adventurous - Harwich's hapenny pier - but depends on weather/winds - but leaves a nice explor of the Stour & Orwell.
Titchmasrh Marina - Walton backwaters - also good but a long trek to Walton
PM me if you want further details.

It depends on what you are looking for.
Stone Point @ Walton Backwaters is a favourite for sheltered beach anchorage, but no facilities. With your boat you could reach Walton town quay @ HW for a short visit.
If you want a bit nore night life, you could try Burnham. Lots of pubs & restaurants, and choice of marina or swinging moorings. An easy trip for you via Rays'n Channel if tide suits.

woulnt advise ha`penny pier as the commercial traffic ( tugs, survey vessels) just dont concider boats moored / rafted @ the pier& cause a large wash = damage.
i have tried once , never again!.

Brightlingsea is nice, always seem to have a warm welcome. In addition a trip up to Wivenhoe, moor up and a drink or lunch in the pub.
Obviously check wind and tides and ask locals about the inshore short cut from Bradwell to Brightingsea. Recall a good anchorage opposite Brightlingsea....Stone Point?

I didn't expect so many good ideas. I shall invest in "east coast rivers " by jack coote, will i get this in a chandlers? I think Walton may be a long haul better tackled when we are moore familiar with the area and the boat so, depending on wind and tide, I will have a go at Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe, Maldon and hopefully Burnham. Nobody mentioned West Mersea, is there nothing there?

Thanks

west mersea very good there is the club launch to get u ashore or Tollsbury marina. its a bit restrictive for depth bt facilities for family r good , the food wasnt the last visit we made.
we might well be around "essex" this w/e as the wind is forecast s/e & late tides

Would recommend Tollesbury - we are based there so I am biased! interesting to hear that Sailorman had bad experience with food last visit as we had a new chef aprox 18 months ago and we have found the food to be very good.

The swimming pool will be open from Saturday so good for entertaining the family.

We visited Brightlingsea last weekend and had the usual very friendly welcome from the harbour master. Also there is a new Indian restaurant opened close to the front which looked to be very good - will be paying a visit next time we are there.

Somewhere else worth a visit is Heybridge Basin. It is always exciting to lock in to somewhere and there are two excellent pubs next to the lock and a good chippy and indian restaurant about a mile walk up the canal tow path.

Definately invest in east coast rivers. It should be available from most east coast chandlers.

Drop me a line if you have any questions

Yes and yes, Access over the sill in to the marina is about 2 hours either side of high water (for a boat with 3 feet draught) give them a call on Ch80 and they will allocate you a berth. alternatively if no VHF go to the fuel berth under the big crane and go to the office to be allocated a berth. There should be plenty of berths as the club is going up to Walton

Enjoy your visit!

Re: West Mersea

West Mersea is fine but you will need a tender to get ashore. There's not much water around at Low tide so IMHO I would suggest you time your arrival for near the top of the tide. The Channel is marked with a combination of buoys and withies so follow your chart carefully. If you call the West Mersea sailing club by phone they will normally find you a mooring for the night (about £3 or £4 if I remember.)

Ashore there are good pubs and restaurants all within easy walking distance. With a SE it will be a bit bumpy if the wind kicks in so make your final decision closer to the time.

Burnham is fine providing you can get across the Spitway at or near Low water. Don't try fighting the ebb up the Crouch as it will take you forever to get up river.

There's also a couple of good anchorages just inside the Roach. All very well sheltered but you need to be self sufficient for the night as there are no facilities.

Good luck and good sailing.

High Tide Bradwell 0930,1017 & 1103 respectively over Sat, Sun & Mon this weekend. http://www.ukho.gov.uk/tideprediction.cfm

Lots of good advice given. You dont say whether you can dry out or not but I would've though a relaxing weeked around the Blackwater with Tollesbury and Brightlingsea as overnights would be good. Maldon possible on the tide but you will dry on the mud. Queens Head at Maldon newly refurbed and very good. Harbour Master at Brightlingsea very helpful chap. Moorings on pontoon and water taxi to shore but dont think theres any shorepower.

Likely to be afloat myself on Sun/Mon but Ribbing rather than sailing so give us one of those curt yottie vs mobo nods as we go past!!

Cheers, AJ

I guess i can dry out as i have a retractable keel but have not done it before and would be a little worried about mud clogging up th keel when back afloat. I will give it a go and blame you if it all goes wrong!!! What colour rib??

I'dve thought you'd be OK to dry out with the keel retracted - Can't imagine that it would get that bunged up with finest Maldon mud to be a problem!! In fact the ability to dry out must be a big point for your boat in this area.

I'll probably be out in a 8.5m Red Ocean RIB. I'll keep an eye out for you. Having seen what type of yot you have clearly you are a closet mobo'er anyway so I expect a much friendlier wave then!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
