Why, as he said he doesn't need to use it? No point in looking for problems that don't exist and wasting money on something that won't be used!
If his fridge is designed to run with only one thermostat on the 12 volt supply then he doesn't have a problem with the fridge. He needs to sort out the switching of the 230 v supply, in that case it would be acceptable to disconcert that supply or either fit a switch or a thermostat. If the fridge has a thermostat (s) on either or both supplies and this is defective, he has a problem with the fridge. I personally would want to rectify by repair or replacement. Again, personally, in that situation, I would consider isolating the 230 v. and leaving the fault in place to be bad engineering practice. However, we all have differing standards. His boat, his fridge, his decision.
