\"Freeview\" digital receivers

Having seen the good reports on various "freeview" digital receivers does anyone know if it's possible to buy a 12 volt version and who might stock them?

Most of them are 12v as they are run off 240v wall transformers typically.
Any electrical retailer will sell them - eg Comets, Currys, John Lewis etc etc etc

Woolworths

Have em at £50.

Got one for my step-mum last week (but they said that this was ABSOLUTELY the last trade they were willing to do with me)

Not, so, Brendan. I looked for ages before I found [link=http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl.php&p=301855] this one[/link]. I believe Panasonic do a 12V one, too.

Must a just been me then. Walked into shop, and picked up 12v version and left 3 minutes later. Think it is Panasonic.

lucky bugger. most I looked at were two pin mains leads in the back. I opened one up, hoping to find a 12V bit inside, but the bugger was all switchmode stuff, and running in excess of 300V DC in places.

Do these things have any use outside of the UK? Is there a French 'librevoire'(?) or similar

Re: \"Freeview\" digital receivers

Free to air boxes come in two types these days as far as the power supply is concerned: those with an external "brick" type and those which take mains into the box. The first type will take low voltage DC from the "brick". If it's 12v, you can power direct from the boat's supply. Check though, it may be different but a quick check on the brick should say what that produces and it may have quite a wide range.

The ones that take mains will all be switched mode. I don't know of any that aren't. Be careful since there will be spikes in excess of 600v in these !!!! I design them.

Re: \"Freeview\" digital receivers

I bought a Panasonic unit (John Lewis) that was 12 volt powered however I have an inverter so I can run my PC, TV Box, Video and Microwave.....The TV signal near Brighton was diabolical before but with the Freeview box was excellent and all the additional channels keeps my son busy.....On a recent trip to France I couldn't get any TV at all in spite of the TV box being multi system (Secam and NTSC).....

As far as I am aware there is not a digital terrestial system in France, this based on empirical observation that Digi boxes are not for sale in French shops, they seem to major on Satellite systems.
Samsung LCD flat screen tellies are multi standard out of the box and can process French analogue systems automatically and being small and compact with low consumption are ideal for boat.(other makes are probably similar)

Anyway academic as French TV is merde.
