Anyone know what the situation is with Foulgers now? It was being monopolised by the windfarmers but that was some time ago and we don't do it more that twice a year.
Trying to plan summer possibilities

The following was from Tillergirl in the post Burnham to Chichester.

There is a small thing here called the London Array Wind Farm! The nav buoys to Foulger's have been removed for the construction phase and have not yet and may never be replaced. But there is an avenue left for us to use. Download my image of the wind farm to see the pylon numbers to guide you. Most work on the Farm at the moment is cable burying and commissioning. Call up the Mary Ann 1 guard boat for the latest guidance of any craft to avoid. They should not warn you off and will probably be very helpful.

As for me being bl**dy minded I will be using Foulger's Gat if I go direct to Calais at end of May :p

Work is indeed still going on bury the cables between the windmills, but the main build is finished. A lot of people complained last year (and rightly so) that the guard boats were being aggressive to any leisure mariners wanting to pass through Foulgers. The RYA recently harrassed London Array and told them they should be assisting people through if at all possible, as was agreed at the start of the work, not using any old excuse to put them off.
So the situation should now be better, and if anyone finds that it's not, get on to the RYA about it.

Why bother with Foulgers Gat ?

Because if coming down from the Orwell via Black Deep, going via Fisherman's Gat can add up to an hour to the journey which can be rather an important consideration when one is trying to get to Ramsgit or Dover before the North bound tide starts at HW Dover -2!

When crossing the Thames last May we allowed ourselves to be 'persuaded' not to use Foulger's and press on to Fishermans instead which in retrospect we both regretted.

+1 Coming from Brightlingsea I cross Buxey / Gunfleet at the Wallet Spitway then head east to cross Sunk Sand near Barrow No2 then head south into Foulgers Gat.

Yes, get the tide wrong in that part of the Black deep and you can be facing 2+ knots against you.

There is a chartlet of the Little Sunk crossing point (nr the Barrow No 2) on my web site. I think that's where I was going when I passed you that morning in the Blackwater, Peter.
