Re: Formula 34\'

Your quite correct it did have a 2 bolt mains car engine fitted before Dave C owned it. I have seen 75mph out of this boat.
The bathing platform teak came about as the result af an accident in Braye harbour (don't use disposable BBQ's on swim platforms even if it is placed on a wet plank)
It also had a retrofitted "trackrod" between the legs

The Props were nothing to do with me!!!

Re: Formula 34\'

Just thought of another thing.........
The baffles in the swim platform were removed to give it more "thunder" and less "silent" Also the exhausts were non switchable.

Yeh, I guessed there was some history behind the teak but haven't poked under it yet, though it's probably about due for replacing. Shame about that port engine. It's now sitting in my garage after deciding it really didn't like boats ) I like the sound as it is now without the baffles, but 75mph? I thought this was supposed to be a sensible forum. So who was the owner during the period you knew it and when was that?

FWIW, I'm also a member on www.boatmad.com, come on over and say hi. (I'm matt on that forum) I always considered MBY to be more for the bigger boats, and boatmad for the quick stuff, hopefully I wasn't being unfair.

Under the teak you will find a disposable BBQ size scorch mark on the port side. Dave Crombie is a mate of mine, who now owns "Ruthless" (as you know) He sold D.R to Sean who I also know. So I knew that boat for 3 or 4 years I would guess. Dave got it from nationwide boat sales.

Re: Formula 34\'

There was a boat moored in Cobbs I think called "Rough Diamond", this looked very similar to Matts boat and definitely had switchable exhausts. Hell of a beast, very nice couple owned it but used it rarely. We were very new to boating then 2002 and didn't know what the boat was.

I recall they heard/felt a small jolt just off Rockley one morning whilst touring/pootling with us up the harbour, then proceeded to blast across to the IOW in about 15minutes from the Harbour Entrance and then back, with 70 yr old Gran on board! Upon return they found the jolt had actually and unknowingly damaged the leg quite badly and 50% of the cover was missing beneath the water!! Still got em there and back at a speed I couldn't comprehend at the time. Cost em a fortune to rectify if memory serves. I've got their number somewhere if anyone wants it.

Theres also what looks like a early 80's 3xx sr1 (not 357, maybe 311 can't remember) in bad condition at port solent. Been sitting there for years, can't see it going anywhere again soon.

Re: Formula 34\'

What colour schem is that one then Matt, might be another ex Abersoch boat. There were about 10-15 of them there in the early 90's, all but one has now gone elsewhere.

It's a more boring place without them!

It is a long shot, but your boat might even be the 1989 brochure boat. I know that Abersoch land and sea did import several of the brochure shoot boats - I think they got good deals on them - and yours is from about the right sort of time.

How cool would that be!!! Certainly mine looks identical to the one in the 89 brochure in every detail.

Re: Formula 34\'

The other one at port solent is very faded red, possibly TRS drives (I'm not very well up on pre bravo drives), pre silent thunder era, possibly a 302 sr1. Something like that anyway. Would make a great project for a pair of 400hp GMC v8 diesels.

Re: Formula 34\'

The shame for Formula is that they have had a number of bad importers over the years which have put a number of people off buying them, there has been numerous complaints made to Formula who have suffered due to this -not going to mention any names but luckily they havent affected the reputation of the boats themselves.

Formula are currently developing the use of VW Tourag V10 diesels for their boats including the fastechs, which should be good.

Yeh, I've thought exactly the same. Not only is it slightly longer than my 292, but it's slightly deeper hull too, which I think would make quite a difference in the usuability of the cabin. Be pretty nice with pair of peninsular v8 diesels @ 400hp each.

Re: Formula 34\'

Have you been to see it, is it a 311? I couldn't remember exactly what model it was. I reckon the interior would be about due for an update by now anyhoo, along with the rest of it. Shame it's been just left there, and it has been like that for a long time too I think. I was chatting to someone the other day that knew some of it's history, I'll ask and get back.

Quote from Col "I have seen 75mph out of this boat."

Well all I can say is it must have been on the M3 behind a very powerful tow vehicle!
