Can anyone tell me about the force 120 outboard. Got one on my new-ish!!! boat , no documentation, never had one before, can anyone tell me do I mix fuel & oil before putting in tank (tank is S/S built into boat) or do I take the engine cover off to look for an oil tank (like in my last small two stroke) is the force 120 a four stroke or a two stroke - how do you tell. also should I change the engine oil (like a car) should I renew the spark plugs - dont know when or if ever last done. any servicing or bits that should be greased etc, is the impeller easy to change and where would I find it. also does the exhaust and cooling water flow out the prop centre. Any info much apprec. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Fairly sure that the Force is a two stroke.

They used to be "Chrysler" engines, then bought by Mercury.

Impellor change will need the lower unit to come off.

Changing spark plugs, change oil in lower gearbox, grease prop shaft etc. is always a good idea.

cheers s28 is that the bottom half with the prop. is it a garage job.
Are the plugs the same as car plugs or will I have to go to swindelry.

Is it a garage job? Straightforward if you know exactly what you are doing and have the tools. Impossible if you don't.

Spark plugs are not the same as in a car.

I had a force 120 many moons ago - so memory a bit patchy but definitely 2 stroke oil mixed with petrol (cant remember ratio)
impeller in lower gearbox (I remember changing it on the beach). The plugs will probably be the gap less type - so if they work dont fix. As S28 says was a Chrysler block, served me well only real prob was one of the ignition modules had to changed.

cheers

Sadly I had a Force 85 - was the worst blinking thing I've ever had, didn't manage ONE single weekend without a breakdown!!!!!

Hopefully you won't have any problems at all, but I wouldn't put to sea without a good auxiliary!

Well it fired up ewhen I bought it four months ago after a few turns and ticked over OK. So I shouldnt change the plugs !
Do I need to add the oil to the fuel in the can before filling boat or do I put the oil in the tank first (correct ratio obviously) then fuel or wont it mix well that way.
The impeller is out for me thanks S28.
Anything else I should do before the summer - Oil change ??? or ??
The engine is a 94 and had a full rebuild and new head four years ago due to a siezed piston. and does look pristine condition. How big an auxiliary engine would I need for a 17ft with few people on board and anyone selling one?

no engine oil its 2 stroke - remember (oil in petrol tank)
warning - DO NOT run engine out the water or without muffs/hose
add your oil to jerry cans prior to filling with petrol

This depends on where your planning on using her.
Small one on a lake, bigger one if your going to sea ;-)

Don't forget a dry bag and a fully charged mobile phone when you go out, especially if your not confident in your engine/s.

Good luck!

thanks alrob, i have the muffs, any idea what the mix ratio is.
moon i'm using on a loch so i take it 10 - 15hp ok
