Force 10 forecast - lets go sailing!

+ 1 Sandy

I would sail with this guy anytime (not that he'd have me) knowing that he has the tenacity to test his equipment and himself. A racing driver does not get quicker and more skilled by staying in the garage.

I'd disagree with you. He has undertaken a number of mid winter passages from Norway to Shetland! I'd consider those passages had far more risk.

He knew what he was doing and had carefully planned the trip.

Yes, I would consider going out in something like that.

You say that like proper nuts is a bad thing... ;)

It's a compliment

Glad you enjoyed your sail. And am sure you would agree there is a huge difference between a forecast of F7-8 potentially F9 at times (which many/most of us have experienced grabbing the window to scuttle downwind to better shelter) versus being in an actual sustained F10 - which does happen but is usually a severe batten down the hatches event.

Yes. Absolutely. I would think that at F10 one’s ability to make the boat go where you want to go will be compromised.

? Rovaer to Haugesund is not far - under 5NM- I've sailed around there. With no disrespect to Erik - it was a short test of rough conditions downwind. His other passages to Shetland in winter were much more hazardous. None of the Northern North Sea is trivial, summer or winter. I would not go looking for that sort of weather, but coping with a little when caught out is a valuable experience.
