For years SWMBO and I used to have conversations that went.
' Do you want to get married or buy a new boat/sails/etc'. Our engagement lasted nine years and we are now contemplating buying our 10th boat after thirty years together.

It’s not just boats. In our first year of marriage I went off to look at a 1600cc Golf GTi - extremely rare at the time as newly launched in the UK. It cost more than a year’s gross salary (fortunately was mostly using for work paid expenses trips).

I arrived home with a bunch of roses and the first question was “how much have you spent, then?”
Hence for ever after roses have always been a dangerous sign in our household

Oh, yes, cars were a sore point in our marriage at times. Worst when I bought a Ferrari Mondial which proved to be a money pit, she loved the Porsche 993 and barely batted an eyelid when a dilapidated TR6 on California plates arrived on the back of a truck.

The current Mrs C only went out with me because I had one of those, so her friends told me.

When I proposed 50+ years ago I said " Marry me marry my boat" & she never forgot. She has allowed me to go sailing whene ver I like & spend money on it as I like. In fact on my current boat she arranged all the viewing & the test sail. But she does not sail on it. 95% of my sailing is SH.
