Flying the Cross of St Georege

I'm not rabid about it, but it is upsetting the way Englands' flag has been perverted by football morons, while the Scots and Welsh are untainted.

It's half tempting to try to 'claim it back' by flying the St.George cross, but I'm afraid it's too far gone, and I'm not going to be mistaken for someone who has any time for football !

Lost me here Seajet. Why is it improper for English footie fans to use the national flag but OK for the Scots and Welsh? Or were you suggesting they respect their national banner and only wave the odd haggis, kilt or leek in the stands?

I'm obliged to the OP. Research into flag etiquette in response to his question suggests that on my boat I could regularly fly the Union flag from the masthead quite legitimately. Not because the Monarch or Admiral of the Fleet often steps aboard. More to do with the regular courts marshall that ensue from my inept marine manoeuvres...

As it is St George's day on Saturday and I will be sailing I'm going to fly the Cross of St George. So out of idle curiosity is there a particular place on the boat it should be flown from?

I assume you do know that you would be making an international signal laid down in teh Collision Regulations to say "I require assistance" - as it is from any distance indistinguishable from code flag V

I for one am delighted that English football and in fact all the other sports too are using the St George cross as their flag, before they used the Union Flag which represents all the parts od the UK so was completely wrong. Just as English teams insist in playing God Save the Queen, that is the UK anthem get one of your own.

As for the behaviour of English fans stop alcohol at stadia, ban alcohol on buses ans trains, and arrest anyone who tries to get into a stadium drunk and you will see things start to improve.

I think it was lost before the current Eng-er-land morons got started, when the League of St George (not nice people, they'd have loved The Lounge) used to stand under it to hurl racist abuse at India and Pakistan in test matches.

Another ensign thread, oh goody.

Code flag V and the St George's cross are radically different - by about 45 degrees.

The Dunkirk Little Ships fly the St George's Cross defaced with the arms of Dunkirk.

The fine for flying false colours is potentially a great deal more than £1,000, but you can't be fined for wearing the St George's Cross as an ensign as it is not "distinctive national colours" (Merchant Shipping Act 1995 S4(1)(a)) - before any Englishmen spill their gin, England is not a nation in international or British law, it's part of the United Kingdom, which is. On summary conviction the fine is the statutory maximum which appears to be £5,000 (need a lawyer to confirm). On indictment it could be more - that's up to the judge. (Merchant Shipping Act 1995 S4(2))

What a disgusting retort.

Tit for tat, no more than that. I really don't think people in glass houses should throw stones.

So what is wrong with me drying my union jack and flag of St George Boxer shorts from the spreaders.
Pass another Carlsberg Export, this Bulldog Tattoo is really itching.
"Come on England"

Oh dear god, what happens when you give old men with blazers a bit of power. They have club Byelaws, for crying out loud.

We have club byelaws too! Mostly they are inconsistent incomprehensible over reactions to a temporary problem and nobody takes them seriously, but they are bye laws.

Reading through the RTYC list, I guess they suffer from proximity to London with its hordes of civil servants and lawyers. Those rules smack of someone who takes petty regulations seriously

and you wonder why the english get bad press every where, I am glad I am not english

I'm so very glad you are not English also.

I shall continue to fly my St Georges flags or avatar with pride, which has nothing whatsoever to do with football, the BNP or any other group for which I have nothing but contempt. It is the however the flag of ENGLAND, you know that place where the majority of the population live that serve to provide the minority countries or principalities in the UK with funds to dispense for free university tuition, free prescriptions and care for elderly etc that we cannot afford for England.

I'm quite happy if you choose to fly the Saltire or use it to dry your dishes, I care not either what song you sing those are your choices, but please don't knock us English for daring to be proud of our flag, or to sing the national anthem at English sporting events, that is OUR choice.

TODAY IS ST GEORGES DAY, Saturday 23rd April 2011
