After being away on the boat it became apparent that nearly all the gadgets now rely on usb sockets for charging so where can I get flush panel mount multi usb sockets with 12vdc tails?

Why are flush mount so expensive compared to the cigarette lighter type?????

You can buy these for a few quid, would need wiring into a suitable supply, you can pick up dc-dc converters on ebay for a few quid

Probably because they have to have a transformer built in to take 12v down to 5v?

I just put in a couple more cig sockets and put 2 amp cig-usb adaptors in so I have the option to plug other things in. Each adaptor has two slots, available for next to nothing on eBay.

To be pedantic, neither of them have a transformer. The standalone ones are more expensive because they have "marine" written on them. Note that you don't need a cigar socket for these, just get one with a thin lip (see below), solder wires to the back, and drill a hole in the panel for it to fit in.

A transformer can only be used with AC, not DC. These devices normally have a Switch Mode Power Supply to reduce the voltage. This consists of an IC, plus a few resistors, capacitors and chokes.

Anyway got a 12-5v module and a few usb hubs to make a system on board.Also ended up getting some fag lighter types!

As well as the need to supply 2.1A for the higher power devices. If you are using iPads, iPhones etc they have a special voltage requirement on the data pins. Not all sockets adapters etc supply this

Has anyone pointed out to Angus that he could get rich by making and selling USB flush mount kits? Four or five sockets to a single capable supply would do most people, take up little room and theoretically could be under £40 with a reasonable profit. Almost every forum member would probably buy one too.
