I just read that they're once again fighting people anchoring in public waters because of derelict liveaboards. It's not the first time you hear this. There is a very prominent case in San Francisco as well, that keeps making its rounds.

In the UK I rarely ever see any permanently moored boats that look totally derelict. Is that an us thing?

I'm seeing a lot of commentary that 'anchoring is going to be banned in Florida'.
But when you dig in to it, it appears they want to introduce a free permit for anybody who wants to stay in the same spot for more than three days.
So a bit of an over reaction IMHO.
You can argue that it's the thin end of the wedge I suppose, but the scheme as currently proposed doesn't look especially bad.

It's not as if they actually much freedom in The Land Of The Free. My mate was threatened with a $400 fine because he was spotted in his dinghy without a lifejacket on. That would worry me a lot more than some hypothetical permit that doesn't even cost anything, and which you can avoid by moving your boat every couple of days.

I thought the Thames had a certain slumboat moored near Kingston (whatever happened to his accommodation?) but there must be others moored on Thames which count .
Oh plenty on riverways and in London on their canal boats. But maybe I should have been more precise. I meant people on power or sailboats that look like this one (which I just found in Screenshot 2025-05-14 000655.pngthe UK)Screenshot 2025-05-14 000707.png

I heard they are forbidding anchoring in Florida somewhere now because of such boats.

Another prominent case, that I mentioned but not named directly, are these boats in the san francisco bay 'Anchor-out' boat dwellers face eviction from Richardson Bay

They make a big fuss about it since a decade because they're told to move and they tell everyone that they have roots there and can't just move (sort of ironic if you ask me, someone living on a boat, that is meant to MOVE)

Seems to be that whole communities in the US are constantly an eyesore to everyone around them. But in the UK you only very rarely find anyone, and usually just limited to individuals.

I know a boat on the Medway river using one of the defunct moorings near the B&M and the old pier.

But just one boat.

That's not the first time I hear a case like this in the US, but I have never heard of anything in the UK.

PS: I also noticed they're all pretty much always flying a jolly roger, too. I saw a documentary recently on the ones in SF Bay and I noticed that there already.

Yes interesting question regarding live aboards. Obviously a lot of people in UK live on house boats and barges. Apparently without concern but presumably with satisfactory sewerage arrangements. Yet a concern for locals that a boat can be come a part of a slum.
Here on the Swan river it is not a high priority concern. However a mooring is expensive. I don't know how people can justify a boat that is never used on a mooring. ( about 400squid a year min.)
The question did come up last week when a body a guy was found dead on his boat. Apparently he had become derelict (drugs and alcohol) while living rough on his boat. Not found for some time.
We have a real accommodation shortage and high cost here in Perth. So yes people camping on boats in camper vans in parks etc. All camp sites are over flowing. A real problem. ol'will

Yeah, I suppose the one or other homeless person moves on a boat. That's exactly the clientele there in the US as well. It's just very common over there apparently, while over here it's very rare to see.

Maybe it's not warm enough to really justify living like that on a boat. Diesel for the heater too expensive or something? Those liveaboard communities seemingly live in warm places like california, florida, san francisco etc.
Oh boy. I don't want to get banned so I'd rather not say much about that abomination.

Oh, I didn't mean to spread misinformation. I have just seen one video on it and a few articles mentioning that it was introduced basically overnight. Maybe I fell victim to my own ignorance. Excuse me in that regard.
