out on boat last weekend caught the 10:30 bridge had a little run around in the bay then poped to swanage for dinner, started to leave about 13:30 and noticed that we were a bit low in the water on lifting the engin hatch the bottom of both engins were under water, it seams that float switches are not fitted as standard
on the bilge pumps is this just local to my boat or is it true accross the whole .

hope to pop down to the boat in morning to try and get the last of the water out

You really are missing the point......

You should have KNOWN whether you have a float switch or not....and everything else thats important about your boat. It's not good enough to make assumptions.

You could have bought a boat which didnt even have a blige pump....many dont.

More to the point. If it leaked then, it will have leaked since and will still be leaking. Has it sunk yet??

it seamed that the raw water filter cap had worked it self loose ( even tho after sales had been on board the day be 4 but not in the engin bay but thr engin hatch was up when i got there ) so must be just one of them things

but the question is why dont they fit float switches as standard

I guess because your boat isn't typically kept on a mooring - and I think you might be over-estimating the effectiveness of the bilge pump running as a "water-in-bilge" alarm, unless there is a visual/audible warning of the pump running. Once on plane are you sure you would hear the pump and the outlet jet wouldn't be lost in the boat's wash? I'm certain mine would.

IMHO you can't beat a regular inspection of the engine bay and bilge and getting to know your boat's equipment (you might find other stuff you have assumed is fitted?).

You can get water-in-bilge alarms that can be easily retro-fitted - a better idea than relying on the "post sales guys" (after all they don't come out on your boat with you, do they).

Boats are "user-beware" as well as "buyer-beware"...

Actually not me but ItsOnlyMoney that said that......but then he was probably looking at your profile which says you have a Mariah218 which is certainly not a 33 foot boat. Perhaps you need to be a little more forthcoming with the facts rather than just dropping little snippets of information?

Whatever the size of your boat it behoves you to thoroughly investigate its state of readiness and fitness for purpose. Whether or not it has a bilge pump/float switch or any other basic equipment or gizmos will depend on either the delivery spec for a new boat or the diligence and care devoted to it by previous owners. Either way its up to you to make sure you know what youv'e got and whether it works properly or not.....dare i say even if you've paid someone else to check these things you should make sure for your own peace of mind that what they say is reliable.

Many new boats are delivered with less than perfect specifications, particularly when it comes to what represents essential versus desireable add-ons. If your boat is new you should have ensured that the delivery specification met your expectations. If its second hand either you or the surveyor should have checked out the full monty before you purchased.

You seem to be asking us why you didnt get what you expected when you bought it. Because you didnt make sure you knew what you were buying seems to be the only honest answer we can give.

....it seamed that the raw water filter cap had worked it self loose ( even tho after sales had been on board the day be 4 but not in the engin bay but thr engin hatch was up when i got there ) so must be just one of them things.....

well, I dunno what to say about that but here goes..........
Raw Water filter caps dont 'just work loose' in my experience...it probably wasnt tightened properly to start with......and good practice checks things like that everytime before setting off........and if nobody had been in the engine bay why was the hatch left up? .....as for 'must be just one of those things' sounds like a nice phrase to use in a eulogy?

I wont ask if you know where the other bits are that you need to check on a regular basis.............

No come on Tony, I think we've given the bloke quite enough grief. I once had a bilge pump on back to front, last week my throttle cable fell off, last year it was the prop shaft!! Probably I should have checked them all first. My first two boats did'nt have a float switch either. I think he needs to get one.

Have u made your mind up about that coffin yet or not????????

Dont see why all this makes me a GOM.......seems pretty much common sense to me that whatever you buy you make sure you know what you're getting.

Couldnt have bread and marmalade this morning....bloody baker didnt supply the marmalade with the bread.....not good enough,, is it ?

Maybe your baker couldn't deliver cause he saw a snowflake, as that normally causes pandemonium on the roads down here

raw water filler cap?

What's a raw water filler cap? A cap you remove to top something up with sea water? I dont have one of those.
