Re. Disposal of flares.

Ocean Safety will take them off your hands for £2 each.
Not advertised on their websites, but that’s what I was told when I visited one of their depots a couple of weeks ago.

That's interesting, branch near me. Thanks for the link.

I think you are wrong. They reviewed the risk and decided it wasn’t worth the (probably small) risk of handling / using expired pyros for the cost saving
A much easier choice to make now that they have more money than the monarchy, I'm sure.

Just in case anyone thinks that is true - I went and checked, and even after giving away huge amounts of compensation for Andrew’s highly publicised difficulties the royal family still have considerably more wealth than the RNLI! Don’t get me wrong any charity would love to be in the position the RNLI is in but both in terms of annual income and asset value the monarchy are ahead (even when you exclude stuff that the royal family don’t really own but the nation do).

A sad and worrying story from Noonsite on an accident with flares:

A crew member of the Dutch yacht “Bontekoning” died tragically on January 1, 2023 in the Pacific Ocean. The yacht was on passage from Panama to French Polynesia when 23-year-old Willem Kerstjens from Delft fired the flare just after midnight, as an alternative to fireworks, to celebrate the New Year

Given the date and time I wonder if any alcoholic beverages had been consumed?

If you are in UK and your vessel is in the Med, can you fly out to it i) taking new flares in your carry-on luggage to ii) in your checked luggage?

If neither, how do you get them on your vessel ?

They are prohibited from being carried on planes according to BA and KLM. I assume you buy them in the destination country.

I tried to take some to Holland on the Harwich ferry but made the mistake of declaring them, I had to pick them up from Harwich police station when I got back. Technically classed as explosives. Thats was pre 9/11 so these days even less likely to be able to take them anywhere. Just get a PLB and an LED flare and a signaling mirror. The mirror is rarely mentioned these days but still probably very effective on a sunny day and doesn't rely on batteries.
