Where can i dispose of out of date flares in Ireland does anyone know?

Oh its easy to dispose of alright once you pay the outrages refuge charges!
i like the idea of cross ferry channel

our local chandlery Purcell Marine in clarinbridge organised a group collection and disposal last year - maybe a yacht club or chandlery in your area could do likewise? Have a word with Union Chandlery who are usually clued in on most matters.
Personally I let a few hand flares off in the back garden every halloween - living 15 miles inland I think I'm unlikely to cause a false alarm and the kids enjoy them.

yes set themoff in the garden on halloween. i did 2 this year andmy wife set off another two. It was a good experience to 'test; flares in a non emergency

Hi, I needed to dispose of some well out of date flares a couple of years ago. I contacted the local army barracks(Galway) who were not at all interested and referred me to the Gardai. Local Garda was helpful but unsure - thought it should really have been the army's job.

After a couple of days the Garda called back. Seems he would be able to take them and then pass them to the Army's Explosive Ordnance Division for disposal. However for the civil Garda to invoke the military's help some very high level signatures on papers were required! Same forms as if they needed assistance due to massive rioting or similar. After a few more days he had the paperwork and then called to collect the flares (which were safely contained in a cardboard box).

I'd suggest you talk to the Gardai or the nearest barracks and tell them the flares need to go to the EOD for disposal.

Thanks for your replies. Ill call the chandlers for clarification and ill write back here with the outcome. i wont be setting any off on Halloween as the flares are older than i am, and i simply wouldn't trust them. they date back to the late 70's.

Gards are the guys

A couple of years ago while heading from Scotland to France, I tried to hand them in to Belfast Coastguard but they were unable to make an appointment while I was there. A very helpful Coastguard said he would contact their colleagues in Dublin to find out what the official route was. They came back and told us to take them to the Garda. Went into Houth Garda station and they could not have been more helpful. I seem to recollect that they put them into a cell while they worked out whatto do with them but they agreed that they were the people to deal with them. I got the impression that Irish sailors don't take a lot of notice of expiry dates!
