flag etiquette

One can only assume that someone so rude as to shout this before you'd even arrived has either got something long and hard shoved up his arse or his wife isn't giving him any.

There are, somewhat sadly, a number of nation states that arent best neighbours. If you wish to flaunt your lack of thoughtfulness, or indeed simply forget to pay respects then you will find, perhaps, a level of intolerance you may be shocked at.

Try this simple test. Don a Manchester United shirt and walk around Leeds town centre on a saturday afternoon. Do let us know how you get on.....;)

The only time I have ever been criticised over a flag was when I entered Queensway marina and had left the Spanish courtesy flag flying. No defence but in mitigation it was very windy and in sorting other things out it got forgotten, I did have a very large British ensign.
I had not even passed the rope to the marina staff when he shouted 'get that down.'

OOps. And there's me thinking what a load of fuss for the Medway.

They do have cause to be a bit itchier about flying a Spanish flag over in Gib!
No excuse.
Slovenia and Croatia are at loggerheads about their maritime border (international court, arrests of fishermen, that sort of thing), but I've never heard of anyone getting stick because they're showing the wrong courtesy flag in the Gulf of Trieste. A reaction like that of the uptight little Englishman has no place in modern-day Europe.

I've had the pleasure of a customs search in Iraklion after irritating an official by not having found somewhere to fly the Greek courtesy flag on a mobo we were delivering. Fortunately it was no more than the local alsatian having a sniff round and it did have to be helped off being a bit fat to jump up to the quayside from the deck :)

That's what I thought, too. Do I gather that "Queensway Marina" is actually in that squalid little tax evasion and drug smuggling enclave we really ought to return to Spain? The one where everybody claims to be British but adamantly refuses to obey British laws?

Jumble,+1 but I take it that you are not planning to take your boat through the straits and into the Med, then? If we gave / sold it back , would all the gambling companies etc that blight proper British life have to move on somewhere else?

It's clear that you were seething at outrage at what you thought was a blue ensign, as worn by decent cheps (sic) defaced by some European stars ...

The issue is that the OP has been a tad cleverer than you! He asked a question which "tolerant" chaps like yourself could interperate as being anti EU. The OP I suspect has done a bit of fishing in his time and he got you "tolerant" types "hook line and sinker"
Job done!

Been there for about a year, made some good friends. When Franco shut the border there was no messing about. Everything cut off. They were hauling water from Tangiers! Even now there are sporadic delays caused by officialdom on the Spanish side and that despite up to 10000 Spaniards going across every day to work! LaLinea apparantly is one of the most deprived parts of Spain and yet they do it! You need to get the facts before making childish little retorts! Those uptight little Englishmen are far far more English than you are and provide all those jobs doing what they do!

We have plenty of other squalid tax havens they could use. The ensigns of several appear earlier in this thread ...

It's difficult to see what other explanation could be placed on his suggestion that the flag wasnt just unknown to him, but a breach of etiquette. His refusal to explain is a pretty good explanation.

I'm all in favour of tolerance, and it's nice to see the political mood swing decisively in that direction, leaving those left behind by the Zeitgeist (that's a foreign word) to seek refugee status in places like Gibraltar.

I've Googled, and apparently the "Olive Press" is an English language newspaper for ex-pats in Spain. How do you feel about economic migrants who refuse to adopt the language and customs of the countries they move to?

I won't send your response onto the Polish Express, the Diaspora Româneas and the Urdu Times, all of which, as I am sure you know, are published in London.

Ah, you think he meant something therefore he did! Not being very tolerant of the OP by your translating of his words in to something that suits your so called liberal tolerant agenda?

Ah but I didnt call a community "that squalid little tax evasion and drug smuggling enclave we really ought to return to Spain?"
The people that live there are a small but proud race and what you have said about them is not very nice!

PS, your Googling skills arent very good The Olive Press "A campaigning, community newspaper for the Gibraltar people. The Rock's only investigative local newspaper. We care about Gibraltar."
PPS they are very investigative and they do "care about Gibraltar"
