I've got to fix a new halyard clutch to the mast. The previous installation provides one bolt hole for one end of the clutch but I need another hole for the second bolt. This seems to mean that I've got to drill and tap the mast for another bolt. I assume that people don't use SS self tappers for this job - not strong enough?

Hi rib,
I made up a simple bent stainless plate to bolt the clutch to and then pop rivetted (monel rivets) it to the mast ( use duralac).

Hi Rob you should use the one hole and bolt in the bottom of the clutch when mounted with the rope coming from above. This means all the pulling load is on that bolt. The top bolt (new bolt)would stabilise the clutch and provide a little added strength against the rope pull. I don't think you should be too concerned using a self tapping screw although tapped metal thread would be better. if using self tapper put the screw in (cut the thread) then apply duralac to screw then screw it home. regards will

Agree with Will, but do take the point off the self tapper so that it doesn't damage ropes passing it.

Ken,

Thanks for the guidance. I like your idea of using a SS bracket, which means I can use the pre-existing bolt holes. Much better.

Thanks
