five reason not to buy a boat

I'd rather spend time working upon boats than cars.

I have had my fill of cars. I am currently fixing (replacing parts) on a turbo (or will be once I ensure con rods, pistons, valves etc suffered no damage. It was running so well before.

Oil, rusty nuts, little access, stupid designers that don't give a thought to after-care of cars.

(Never had a boat with an inboard)

I like outboards, but a sailing boat is for sailing.
 
Reason 1. SWMBO says ‘you’re NOT going down to the boat AGAIN are you?
2. SWMBO asks how come you have time to do the anti fouling on the ‘floaty thing’ but don’t have time to paint the kitchen/ bathroom / lounge etc.
3. SWMBO has just found the last invoice from the chandlers and points out it would have gone a long way to paying for a new 3piece suite.
4. SWMBO reminds you regularly of how you missed her mothers birthday party because YOU got the tides wrong.
5. SWMBO tells you that your bank manager has been on the phone about the overdraft!

Used to do some of the routine things on cars but gave up after it took me several hours to replace six spark plugs on my Ford SUV. Basically before you can reach any of the bits on any modern engine you have to first disassemble enough wiring, connectors and plumbing to set up the average house.

Had a Volvo that to change the oil filter you had to lift the car, reach up, behind and around the suspension to reach the filter which was mounted horizontally on the engine with no room to put a pan or bucket underneath. So unscrewing the filter dumped about half liter of oil WHICH poured down over one of the rubber motor mounts which slowly melted and had to be replace every couple of years. Engineer that designed that must have been brain dead.

sorry Chris but after a over a week of weather watching , work out which way this what some called an hurricane was going to move , fighting seas and winds to try and keep out of its way , which didn't quite come to plain, I needed a bit of light relieve ,
plus we manage to get some free internet so given me a good reason to chill and do nothing ,
although I wont have long before
I told to get off my ass and clean the 3 mm salt we have on our deck and sails .
repair a sea cock that wont open and strip out one of our toilet pipe that decided over night to block .
a few more reason not to buy a boat :)

After the last week Vic you’re forgiven! Out to our new boat on Thursday for 5 or 6 days, hope we don’t find too many reasons hot to have bought that one.....!

Don't worry , it be fine , your both still filled with excitement of a new boat , a couple of years down the line it maybe different.
Just look at it this way , you can't take it with you , so enjoy it why you can .
We only spend 3k more this year so far then we expected to spend demolition one sail and decided we may just as well change the other one at the same time as we was getting a good deal .
What the favorite saying by some here , you can cruise the world on next to nothing :)

Skipmac, not a bad guess, did lose one boat during a divorce, but really they were all a bit tongue in cheek, and a mixture of comments from boating friends, fortunately current SWMBO is fairly tollerant of my boating activities.

But remember the old saying ‘The two happiest days are the one you buy the boat and the one you sell it’

personally I wouldn't agree with that ,
but then I not been without a boat for the last 40 years , at times two

Well I was being a bit tongue in cheek myself. I was pretty much a penniless (well not quite, maybe a dollarless) boat bum when I met my better half. Lived aboard and cruised for a year or so after we got married but she became quite unreasonable. Got to where she expected three meals every day, more clothes to wear than a swimsuit and a ratty t-shirt and didn't want to hide from the bill collectors.

So sold the boat and got an actual job. Then 30 years later when the house was paid for, cars paid for and a bit in the bank to fund retirement she didn't object too strenuously when I bought another boat.

"They" always say that but with one exception, I haven't seen any happy days when the boat was sold. When I bought my last boat the seller and his whole family all stood on the dock and cried when I sailed away. I was glad to sell one boat years ago that had become a huge drain on time and money when I was short on both. Otherwise, wish I still had every one.
