I'm fitting a tachometer (rev counter) on my Mariner 55hp two stroke. Its from early to mid 90's. Never had a serial number plate so unsure of exact year. Need to know how many poles engine has so i can get right gauge and also callibrate it correctly. Know it shouldnt be run at more than 5500 revs. Tried looking on various pdf tables of engines and suggested pole numbers but not 100% sure of which engine mine is listed as. Does anyone know how poles these engines have or do they vary from year to year or model to model. Do i have to get a Mariner gauge or are other decent brands suitable?

If no one here knows try asking on the Mercury / Mariner board of the iBoats and /or MarineEngine.com forums
