i have a 33ft yacht which I intend to use to go across channel from the Solent to France frequently.

What make and model of radar would members suggest I fit and can anyone advise as to likely cost and the fitting cost?

Low cost entry level with good capability Furuno 1623

cost less than £1000 + fitting

No good unless you know what you are looking at. a radar course would help.
An AIS using a laptop and software like www.shipplotter.com and an AIS engine such as the Nasa one, would not only provide significant additional information, but would help you learn how to interpret the radar picture.

Note these are complementary and should not be considered as an either/or.

I bought and installed a JRC 1800...very straight forward...then read the manual thoroughly...and then prctised on a good day to look and ships in the channel

Quite confident with it now....I'm sure a course would do the same as I had done....but could probably fill in the gaps

Completely agree with Talbot. I've just fitted a Furuno 1623 and I'm very satisfied with it, but go on a Radar course then at least you will know how to interpret what you see on the display. I found it very useful.

Have fitted a Furuno 1623 and v good too. Fitted it on a strut on the stern. Pipe was made up, out of light aluminium with platform for siting radar and lugs for bolting stabiliser struts to - £120.

Result: no wiring clanking in mast, no removal from mast at end of season, no wiring visible. Make bracket for wind speed/?

Range is unimpaired despite old diehards bleating on about being frazzled by microwaves and saying higher is better. if you work out 'visibility factor of being 3 metres above sea on target that is 20/30 metres above sea you will know what I mean. it picks up buoys too.!

Moody started doing it not long afterwards. Fitted and commissioned ourselves (it's plug and play!)

Just ordered the Furuno 1632 and will start to install hopefully this weekend. Big problem though is attaching cable to mast. I have used the search to lttle effect as I know that there was a discussion on clipping the cable outside. Cable inside mast may happen in the future but it is filled with polystyrene blocks so would be a mast off/down job.
