I am helping a friend to fit a 23 ft GRP cruiser (for inland waterways) and are looking into intalling windows. Do we have to buy them from a window company as made-up windows - or can we buy the bits and 'make them' ourselves? Where can we buy the extrusions? Has anyone done it and is it any cheaper - or if not where is the best place to buy new windows - we need boths sides, front and also a windscreen - can any one help us
thanks
IAN C.

Hi Ian
Most Sign makers use acrylic sheet, and I have found them able to cut any shape providing you have a template (old window). There is also a company called Seals Direct who supply the rubber moulding to fit . There are many companies listed. 01732 464635 Salford House Services or 01322 444400 Display Developments
who supply all materials. Do shop around.

I wouldn't even think about DIY windows. Compared to all the other things you buy for boats, windows are relatively cheap. I have had three new sets over the years, all from Houdini Windows. They are at the show on the narrow bit of balcony at one end or give them a ring after the show on 01621 773293. Ask for Charlie Stewart - he will look after you.

I don't agree with MedMan - made-up windows seem incredibly expensive for what they are, and there must be an incentive to do it yourself. Not done it myself, but I've seen very nice replacement wooden frames made as a DIY job.

Cheap acrylic (perspex) adequate for inland waterways can be obtained from most glass warehouses - they will cut it to shape, but it is not hard to cut youself neatly with a hacksaw, provide it is held very firmly to prevent flexing and cracking as you cut.

For aluminium framed windows, I would guess that it is possible to buy section from the companies that make up these windows. I've found Branchsound Ltd (Technautic Marine Windows) in Burnham helpful: call 01621 782964. But I've never heard of anyone making their own aluminium framed windows.
