Hi.

Early mf805, unfortunately they didnt have hot water as standard. I have the pump, expansion tank etc.

Will get a 10lt calorifier, but where does it plum in to the volvo tamd41?

Im thinking it shouldn't matter, as its the same temperature coming out and in.

Would be good to know for sure though

I have the same engine with calorifier fitted and can confirm your connection ports. I have an isolation valve fitted to each port with a hosetail so in theory you can isolate the heating loop but i have never needed to. Also, you say you have pump and expantion tank. I have neither, as installed from new, and calorifier works well.

On the same subject does anyone know the threads of the ports as I would like to run a saloon heater from the other engine and need to get some hosetails.
I would imaging getting the hoses the right way round would make for easier air bleeding and less chance of an air lock in the calorifier coil, not sure which way though as never looked that closely at the cooling system flow direction.

I cant remember the actual size but I know I was able to use standard plumbing fittings from the local DIY store.

this is an interesting thread - I've only this week discovered that I have a take off from my stbd engine, running frwd and through my calorifier/water heater & back (I'd assumed until now that I would have to use genni elec or mains shore power to heat the tank)... so should I expect to find a pump in that run somewhere? I suppose I should, otherwise why would the hot water circulate??

Mine has no pump, the water circulates due to the engine coolant pump, i get hot water. If you are not getting hot water it could be you have isolation valves (i have them) that are closed or you have an airlock that needs bleeding.

The water is circulating around the engine anyway and the fittings bypass the thermostats so is probably the easier route for the water to take so unless you have some very convoluted pipework no pump should be needed.
As the engine warms up the coolant will have to go through the calorifier as the thermostats will be closed, the calorifer should be getting hot before the engine heat exchanger gets any real flow through it.

thanks chaps, the coolant was replaced in December, so am thinking maybe I need to ensure there's not an airlock somewhere, I don't think there are isolation valves on the loop, will investigate some more. cheers.

Nice website - I too am a solo sailor, so as well as my motorboat I enjoy my little Django 670, a quirky little french boat created from the mini transat 6.50 design, and a bit like you, nothing too heroic - long day sails + multi day cruises. Nice to know there are other such nut cases around :) happy sailing

I have just moved a 50 litre calorifier from starboard to port to correct a list. My engines are TAMD41B so the same as the OP's.
The blanking plugs in the header tank are tapered thread so ensure you use adaptors to match. When I removed the plugs one came out easily the other would not budge and the 10mm square recess damaged quickly so if you find a problem make sure the removal tool sits tightly in the recess. It took me 6 hours to remove the plug but the cost of a new header tank does not bear thinking about! The header tank is a hard alloy and the plug is mild steel so applying heat to the tank may be helpful if it looks difficult.
You may also need to make a secure base to locate the calorifier or you could find it being thrown around in a rough sea with the potential to damage the coolant supply hoses which could drain the engine.
The basic water pump and pressure tank for the boat will also push cold water through the calorifier so no need for anything else.
You an also fit an immersion heater to work off the mains when the boat is moored.

Best to give the boat a good run before trying to remove the plugs so the housing is up at running temp, much less chance of a ring-out and any thread sealant will be softer.
I'm guessing it'll be bspt thread then, probably 1/4 or 3/8, handy as I have some fittings somewhere, being european I doubt they have used npt.

My boat has the original turn wheel adaptors but they continually drip especially in winter, I am thinking of changing the system as Montemar says the it is a tapered thread can anybody advise on the correct fitment. Is it possible to fit a hose tail.

Fittings are 1/2 inch bsp.
Water should flow from stat housing to the lowest part of the coil in the tank then back to the engine , the plug on the stat housing lower one
