Re: Fitting a calorifier to a tamd41.. help with plumbing location

Excellent info lads, ive purchased one of these

For a bargain price, no going back now, info on here has been priceless, will update and keep a eye on the thread also.

P.s. as i dont have mixer taps. I take it doesnt matter??

I wont need cold water, so not a issue if it comes out warm all the time, its just for showeds after beach days.

I find it is best to have a mixer tap as on my calorifier i can't control the temerature of the water in the tank, particularly on 220v, as there is no thermostat and the water from the tank can get too hot to handle without some cold mixed in.

Good point colin, i didnt think of that lol.

Ive quickly just checked the pics of the calorifier i purchased, and theres a thermostat knob fitted on the hot water outlet, hopefully that will do the job

The water will be too hot for a shower without a mixer tap, even if it is just heated from the engine. You will need one or will have to wait for the water to cool down, which could take hours.

My immersion heater has a thermostat built in so it can be set to a desired temperatue, I believe 70 degs centigrade is usual.
The total weight of your calorifier will be at least 50 Kg so you will probably wish to fibreglass in a wooden base to which it can be securely bolted down. 50Kg is a lot of weight so will influence the trim, you can experiment by getting someone of a similar weight to stand at the mounting position and seeing how it alters the boats position.
I have Hep2O plastic pipes and fittings on mine and they are easy to use and do not leak providing fixed correctly. B&Q supply amongst others.

70degrees will be too hot to shower in. I believe that comfortable shower temperatures are just about the right environment for legionella. Also is the thermostat on the immersion heater, or do you also have one on the engine pipework? Don't think I have ever seen the latter on a boat, which means it will get very hot after running the engine. I can't see how the op is going to make it work without a mixer tap if they want to use the hot water to shower.

Hi JW_2000_UK, I would be very interested to see what fitments you are using to tap your feed and return pipe runs of the engine.

The only thermostat is on the immersion to set the maximum working temperature.
I suppose you could say the engine's thermostats also set maximum water temperature, around 93 deg C I believe.
If a shower is to be used surely it would mix hot and cold to achieve the desired temperature and a thermostat would be irrelevant.

I was just following on from the OP saying that he didn't have mixer taps. I am wondering how he is going to use the hot water to shower, without being able to mix some cold in. Anyway, I have said my bit, hopefully there was something useful in it for the OP.

Clb definitely appreciate your input.

As i do all the posts.

I was of the thinking, that as there is a thermo stat on the hot water out of the calorifier. If i set that at 60 or 70, then it would come out of the tap at that??? I could be well off the mark..
Im a complete novice on calorifier's

Re: Fitting a calorifier to a tamd41.. help with plumbing location

Ah ha, yes, that has a cold feed into it. It is effectively a mixer tap, so should do exactly what you need. 70 still might be a bit hot for a shower though! How low does it go?

Phew lol, that saves some pennies, not sure mate, i plucked them figures from thin air.

Im sure it will be a decent temp range.

Re: Fitting a calorifier to a tamd41.. help with plumbing location

I think most supply mixers are set around the 60 degrees mark, that will still be painfully hot for a shower but not hot enough to scald, 38-40 degrees is more realistic for a shower, for the cost of a mixer tap(or separate taps) why wouldn't you fit one, makes the hot water go further too.
If you have the tank/pump/calorifier the mixer is the final bit of the equation.
My old boat had a mixer valve on the calorifier itself and theres no way you'd stand under the hot tap alone.
