A course due W from the West Pole as you leave Chichester Harbour will take you within spitting distance of the gap. You'll pass about 2 cables south of the isolated danger mark off Langstone (Rowan wreck - 2 balls) which tells you you're on course and a mile or so to go. If you can see a gps lat then 50d 46m is a handy line to follow
Don't attempt the gap transit at more than 5 knots with viz less than 10m - hee hee
The gap's a 3 legged concrete 'dolphin' to port and a green post to stbd
Er .. yes ... especially if it isnt a high high tide ... not got them with me, but www.chimet.co.uk is showing around 4.6m for this mornings high, should increase for the weekend I think ?? ... pretty handy to check if you've got mobile internet and want to check the actual height of tide ....!
Yes, 1 hour either side and numerals are feet above cill so VII is 7 ft= 1.8m = your draft. You really need to see VII submerged not just showing and go through in neutral. There are 2 exits, BTW
Should I offer quick trip as pilot and guide out to the Solent Saturday? If so could you drop me Portsmouth en-route? Have a rare chance to enjoy Sat evening with my dearest which I'm not going to miss. It's my turn to talk!
Thanks for the height - can now relate it to the Chichester Harbour curves or the Northney curves - which is best?
Thanks for the offer, I have no problem getting out once past the cill, its a well buoyed channel and I have all the info. However, if you want a ride to Portsmouth then it would be a good way for me to do a quick trip into there with a pilot on board and head straight out ...... I will PM you.
Emsworth is closer to Northney ... but I'm not sure where your getting your primary data, perhaps you could confirm...
From my Reeds:
Portsmouth HW On Sat is 13:15UT @ 4.4 LW 0.9
Portsmouth HW On Sun is 13:45UT @ 4.4 LW 1.0
Secondary port data (from Portsmouth Standard Port)
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
HW Times
0500 1000
1700 2200
Chichester Harbour Entrance
-0010 +0005
Northney
+0010 +0015
</pre><hr />
Tides being ~1330 so your ~ 1/2way between 1000 and 1700 that would make:
ChiHarbour entrance HW Sat 13:15UT -3 = 13:12UT
ChiHarbour entrance HW Sun 13:45UT -3 = 13:42UT
Northney HW Sat 13:15UT + 3 = 13:18UT
Northney HW Sun 13:45UT + 3 = 13:48UT
The height differences are +0.2 for CH entrance for HW springs and neaps, +0.1 & +0.0 for MLWS & MLWN
The height differences are +0.2 for Northney for HW springs and 0.0 for neaps, -0.3 & -0.2 for MLWS & MLWN
Northney is a couple of miles north of Chichester harbour entrance, but is also affected by Langstone harbour, as Northney is just round the corner from Emsworth I'd use Northney as a closer fit. In practice the differences are so small I wouldn't (generally) bother with interpolating.
I took my tidal data from Neptune Tidal plotter - it has always been very accurate for me and gives the secondry port of Northney and its tidal curve straight off.
Speak to emsworth yacht harbour they have tide tables with the height of water over the cill next to it. They could fax you a copy. i have't mine with me or I would. Tarquin should be able to give you the information?
