It occurs to me that on calm, midge-infested warm nights with 4 adults aboard (2 holed-up in the V-berth forward), a couple of powerful fans, and enough amps to keep 'em running quietly all night, might be vital to comfort when hatches are shut. Especially if they can suck in ducted, filtered air from outside, rather than just sitting on a shelf, recirculating farts.

It's possible to buy mosquito nets to drape over hatches and companionways, but midges don't go more than about 50' offshore and are generally only an issue for a couple of hours in the evening anyway. I have never had a problem with them while anchored or moored, and without greenery you tend not to get them in marinas and harbours. In fact the only place I've been badly gnawed by the little sods was at the back of the basin at Crinan.

I wasn't disagreeing from personal experience. I've only been to Scotland in deepest winter. But the impression I took from the midge-thread, is that they're a problem anyone outdoors needs to take seriously.

I'm not usually bitten when I'm out with SWMBO and other mates, although I've seen friends absolutely driven to distraction, incapacitated by their reaction to insects outdoors.
