Vyv, hate to disagree but the vast majority of new cars do have fusible links, they are normally fairly hidden and a quite large to prevent nuisance blowing. They are there purely to protect the fire situation we are talking about.

Could well be. My current car is 1995 and I'm unlikely to own a 2003 one for many years. I doubt that I, or the vast majority of the world's population, have ever had one fitted but how many battery cable fires have there been?

I'm not against fusible links in principle, I just see people spending more an more money on "safety" features that are:
a. defending against something that is technically feasible but so rare as to be almost insignificant
b. quite easily guarded against by cheap, conventional means

And on the "walk away from a car fire" point, that may not be all that true as cars become ever more electronic in operation.
