YM did a test in Nov 2003. Basic conclusions (greatly paraphrased) were carry several extinguishers, dry powder seemed to be more effective than foam, but best to have both. Dry powder "Best Buy" was Draper PD1GA. This is on Screwfix site at £15.99 - see this page for details.

I don't think Co2 is a good idea as it will leave the hull in a dangerously unbreathable state for some time after you have emptied the extinguisher.

I could be wrong, maybe an expert could comment further.....

Thats true but so will the smoke and fumes from the fire and our old favourite Halon would also have done.

Don't use the Dry puwder anywhere near your engine. It will bugger it up - so not suitable for engine rooms

Why not keep the Halon - many have...... I know its illegal but.....

CO2 apparently you need quite a large cylinder of gas to be useful and it must be contained to be effective. Ignore the danger of co2 - just the same for Halon.

Replacement for Halon comes from a company called Firemaster
