Be interesting to know if the rock dodging was worth it or that Macif came out in front. Whatever, not a lot of room for error or windshifts or anything really :eek:
 
It seems that you have to be doing something over 15kn for the foils to work effectively, so I think I'll give them a miss.

Apparently they work by raising the boat, which I can understand, but I was wondering if they also help with keeping the boat upright and thus reduce the need for ballast in the keel?

I was under the impression that they do not actually foil in the way, say , a moth does.
i thought that the foil was to aid stability and replaced the water ballast tanks of the earlier models thus making the boat lighter
am i correct in that assumption?

Mostly. The benefit of the foil over water ballast is that it keeps the boat lighter, and in fact does lift it a bit a high speeds. Not out of the water, but has the effect of reducing displacement further. And of course this effect increases with speed.
So the biggest gains are reaching and downwind in heavy air.

Had my play last Saturday. Lost of legs holding a steady 12-14 knots of boat speed, occasionally higher. Chugging around at 6 knots in my own boat will never feel the same again.

So what sort of prices are they fetching. Are they still racing as a class, or have they just been dumped?
What would happen to performance if one added a couple of berths, a loo & a small galley & some fresh water storage tanks?
