Fifty Feet of Grey (steel)

The superstructure is cut, along with the stairs, and flybridge.
Some sections are set aside for folding/rolling.
The hull starts next...

With the delays, i may well get the first weld....

You have lost me Bart, which part are you looking at...

Rob, it's the cockpit that looks wrong I believe. The position of the coaming in the images will give a very small cockpit. It would seem more logical for the coaming to be placed around the outer edge of the hull with a bathing platform extending aft. What is difficult yo appreciate from the images are any changes in levels / steps around the back of the boat.

What will you do for tender launching and storage?

Pete

With one of your bug bears with the current boat being the process of getting on and off the boat, surely some bathing platform overhang beyond the hull is a must so you can simply step from pontoon etc. Unless you are going for extra hydraulic platform behind this a la 'Blue Angel' ??

PS just showed the 3d to wife and said this is what rob is building and she says 'Oh wow, how long will that take him?'

(Reply to petem)

Its actually larger than you think. I was initialy of similar frame of mind, until i had a look at one. It does work. We actually discussed not fitting it, until later, (it actually makes life easier for construction and engine fit, not to fit) and then making our minds up. Either way, its one of the last items in.

There are seats built in, which i am looking at using for bottle storage or similar...

The change in levels areeither side of the flybridge stairs, as they drop down from the fwd walkway.

We have a few ideas of tender storage, one of which is just roll it up and shove it back in the lazarette. Not ideal, but i dont really want to spoil the lines.
Opacmare do a small swing out rest, for the hull of a small boat to sit in, is another option.
There are a few ideas floating about, and these will develop as we progress.
I also like the idea of an extra swim platform affixed to the back. Nothing huge, just a small one in keeping with the rest of the boat, that maybe where the tender sits permanently.
I dont like the idea of some systems, that are massivley over complicated and over engineered, with price tags to boot.

Yes, and maybe. Still not ruled out some form of hydraulic platform for tender launch etc. the big companies that make it, all looks overbuilt and over engineered. Will come up with a solution that will do all...

Hopefully 14 months, but i need to get my arse back to work again... (May have a new job too :)

Rob, fwiw I fully agree with BartW, Deleted User and petem when they say (as I understand) that they don't like the rounded inner coamings in the cockpit.
In which sense are you saying that it works? I really can't see one single advantage in having a fixed restriction to moving around in that position...

It works as i have seen it. It make a safe area for young nieces and nephews, and parents who cant fall over the side. As a safety advantage i think its ideal, it actually makes for a nice cosy area, on the 46 i looked at. Your right, for getting about the boat in haste, ie tying up etc.... Could be a real pain... Singlehanded esp....
but, we do not have to fit. There are areas, that will be making up as i go along. I am not one who can instantly see it all in one drawing. So, when the time comes, we shall fit them, sit on them. Look at them for a day, or a week. If after that, we lob them over the side, so be it. We have that option. :)
Bear with me, as we are still very fluid as to what and which direction we are going with certain parts. Slowly over time we will start developing ideas. I have lots of ideas, and patience to try and mock up different scenarios. Including the cabin layouts etc...

A very sensible approach, time and construction requirements permitting.
You wouldn't have that option with any streamline production boat, that's for sure! :)

bit of an update... we are late....
like a couple of months...
Been to holland again, just got back now. The superstructure is all sat there cut, rolled folded, waiting for a truck. the hull is not. the designer has had issues with a contractor, who was doing some of the cad detailing. This has been a major pain in the arse. Thats sorted now, and the latest date is two weeks time... probably just as i go to work again.
Anyway, I have been up to the yard where its all been cut, all plasma cut, and rolled and folded. Which coincidentally is next door to privateer yachts, so we are in good company.
the yard are experts. they have a (possibly 50ft) sailing boat hull, they have made. A full rounded bilge keel, basically made on an english wheel (These are used to make the double curvature plates) OK, its not my cup of tea, but the finish was second to none.

had a good few hours running around at METS too...

Cheers for the update Rob, I was wondering what the state of play was!
The sooner you get all of that steel into God's country ;) the sooner I'm able to drop by and have a look...
Keep us posted.

Just had a crazy thought for you. If you have the CAD files from your designer?? Can you get access to a 3d printer or they have one in IQ jersey. You could get yourself a 1/10th model printed up before Xmas !!! Give you some inspiration and something to visualise and think about.

What a great idea! Even better, get them to cut all the pieces and Rob can have an 'Airfix' kit to practice on in between stints at the bottom! :encouragement:

Anyone else here remembering the model ice breaker in Tomkinson's Schooldays in Ripping Yarns? :)

At 1/10th scale, that would almost make a practical tender. How smart would that be to head ashore to the pub in a scale replica of the mothership.

I have just received my report from the wolfson unit at southampton.
There power figures and analysis has shown we actually need less power than initially thought. Which is great news. Means we can get more fuel in for when required.
