Fifty Feet of Grey (steel)

I have no knowledge of welding, so an open question. In the pictures (particularly the second one) it looks like there is quite a lot of rust in the welds that presumably is very difficult to completely remove. Given you know you stuff, you seem quite relaxed about this, so curious how you ensure the rust is dealt with, so that it can't easily come back a few year's down the line.

The reason I ask is because Linssen make quite a deal of the fact that they weld shotblasted steel and then shotblast it again before painting. That sounds quite meticulous, but is it just marketing spin?

The hull is not welded yet, so not an issue. It is purely surface, and will come off with a wire brush. The original steel plate was grit blasted, then painted. Obviously since then its been back in the platers mill to be cut via plasma, so these cut edges are more suscebtible to corrosion due to the heat affected zone, albeit minimal with a plasma cut.
We start fully welding soon, and I will be there with a rotary wire brush, cleaning up weld zones, before the welder follows along behind.

Once the steel work is fully welded and no more holes to cut or areas to weld to, the whole lotis being blasted and two pack epoxy primer applied.

Steel stock generally comes shot blasted and primed from the mill. British standards require max 30 mins between the two processes. The primer on Rob's metalwork I should think is a temporary coating to reduce corrosion during fabrication, I'm sure it'll be blasted again immediately prior to application of the actual paint system.

edit: beat me to it by 3 mins but at least I had it right!

Im struggling with time at the moment, but someone is shining on me today. we are sailing in to Gt Yarmouth to de-mob/down man, so I get to go to METS again this year. run around like a headless chicken tomorrow, drive home, dump off work bag, pick up boaty head and fly to Amsterdam for a few days. Bummer really, as was in Den Helder two days ago.... trying to get the boss to go back there, but he is having none of it....

Great to see things progressing Rob, it must be very hard being away so much when if I were you I'd want to be 'hands on' on the boat! I think Vas is probably going to beat you to launching however.... (Either way, you'll both beat me and I had the least to do - so can fully appreciate the time thing! :( )

Long delayed update gents.
First off, apologies for the large delays in updates.
Several reasons, including, but not limited to...
#Too much work,
#Looking after parents when not working.
(My mother has alzheimers and dementia, unfortunatly my dad is too stubborn/loyal/stupid/brave to do what he needs to do, and let us put her in a home, so i also try to give him a break, and time out etc etc
# HMRC wanting all my money.... I asked the yard to slow down, while i sorted that out.
Now also my industry is in recession, so also I am careful not to spend so much.
# having to go over every aspect of design, and redraw everything from scratch, as the original designer couldnt be arsed anymore.... He had issues with a previous partner, and a court case etc etc etc... It all comes out in the wash, needless to say has cost me dearly, and continues to as i have to pay extra for someone else to help with design work, that he has, but wont release, or answer emails blah blah blah..

Anyway.... Back to reality, new year, new start and all that....
Im not going in to whats and whys..... Just the haves and have nots....
We have a complete hull, the considerable amount of missing items the yard have fabricated, and fitted.
Engine beds have been cut. Fuel tanks are cut. The hull is basically finished, minus the final welding. This will start when the yard are ready. They are also working on two 15metre trawlers, and I am happy to fit in.

The drawings and cad files i expected with the steel have never materialised. This left me completely in the dark, with nothing to work to. For example, i cannot send a cad file to trend for pricing of screens....
so, had the whole hull 3d scanned. Now i have to teach myself cad software too.....

What i have now, is a working GA, and some of the more detailed design docs. Fuel tanks, water tanks, black water, locations of equipment, gen set, stabs, cabin layouts, etc etc...

What i will do is post some, and more photos, when i get home this weekend.

Happy new year all :D

If anyone knows of one, I am looking for an electrical design engineer, who can draw me up an approved wiring schematic.
I had a chap, but unfortunately the company has gone under.
Its no good, me just lobbing boxes in anywhere, and cables to suit, so if im doing this, its getting done once, and right.....

Cheers :)

Can Halcyon of this parish help you? http://www.kddpowercentre.co.uk

Pity about the naval architect, he's drawn some lovely lines. You might be forced to go back to the good old template for the windows , take a photo with dimensions, and email that to get quotes.

...but looking on the bright side the steel kit fitted together perfectly! Now that is a really amazing achievement, fair play to the NA.

the world seems to be flooded with oil at the moment, the general consensus is that Saudi is dumping oil on the market to try and shut down all the American 'high extraction cost' shale oil producers; including the Canadian tar sands.

best way to save money on the build might be to fit it out with Polish carpenters on a low contractors 'day rate.' You probably could save 50% in wage bills.

the good news: with the price of oil so low you can afford to zip everywhere at top speed!

Hi Rob,

Sorry to hear about your Mum - SWMBO's Mum has dementia too and it's very difficult. A close friend's Mum has Parkinsons and his Dad is really struggling - it's a full time job to care for her. It's difficult to explain to anyone who hasn't encountered first hand, but you never really know where each day will take you. Cheryl's Mum remembers things from 40 years ago like yesterday but has lost the last 20 altogether it seems. She's in a home, but had Cheryl not made the decision it would have been made for her as she really needs 24x7 care. Talk to your Dad, he will need help even if only a few hours reprieve from a home help because it will otherwise take a toll on his health too. :(

The boat will wait and if they have space and other work to fit around it, then it probably suits you to have a bit more time - especially given the lack of info from the designer. Always better to take time and be sure of everything rather than rush and have to redo! I'm playing a similar game with my little project - juggling work, time and resources so guessed from your earlier posts etc that work had slowed.

It's good to hear that you are still making progress - even if slow - and pictures always welcome when you can. Hopefully 2015 will be a bit easier :encouragement:

Always an upside RB :)
Not getting into an oil discussion here, but I agree with you, opec (ie Saudi) have said no drop in production, for exactly the reasons you state. Their oil is peanuts to extract.... Push a straw in the sand it will come up with oil....

Good idea to try Halcyon....
Pm sent :)

many thanks Robin.
Yes, its difficult. My dads the one I worry about. My mother is just an empty shell. She has not spoken in six months. She is in her own world, and reverted to a child like state. Bloody awful, considering she spent all her life as matron/sister looking after people exactly like she is now, and worse, on a medical unit.

Very sorry to hear of your troubles Rob, not only with the boat build but - even more important - with your parents' health.
All the very best for a much brighter 2015, on both counts!

Thank you MM,

Being as I have been a little tight on drawings etc I have attempted to convert a couple to photbucket. Results not great but will give you an idea.....

+1 on the sympathy front. My MiL had Alzheimers and it was hard seeing her deteriorate (but not as had as it was for my wife). Fortunately cancer and a spell in hospital got her in the end.

Thanks Pete,
Enough of that now, (not ungrateful at all, just moving on)

Lewmar V4 winch should be here in a couple of days, along with a 316 claw (bruce) anchor.
The pool anchor i was going to use, has not materialised in time, and i need to move on with some things.
I am on surface at 1000 tomorrow, so hopefully home tomorrow evening and can crack on again...
Boat show tuesday....
