Further to the post of Mari-Cha IV's 24 hr record and that they have been averaging 21 something knots, made me think the fastest I've been under sail - not for 24 or 80 hours - just the fastest.

Here's mine 14.1 knots - Sigma 38 - Upper Clyde in 3 metres of water. Scared the pants off me.

Any takers?

Donald

Couldn't see over the stern wave

23 knots in a Barracuda off Cork in the 94 Around Britain and Ireland race. Started off with full main and a kite in a F5 but the wind built and built and in the end it was a full blow. It was quite exciting before we broached, snapped the guy and then had full kite dragging us side ways being held by the lazy sheet which had coiled at a deck block.
Lost the kite and bent the top of the mast.

Pretty expensive and scary rush !

On second thoughts, I'm sure I've been faster on a Dart 18 in a F6. But no idea how fast. Fast enough for the bow wave to turn to mist, rather than spray.

SS Malcolm Miller (150ft schooner) - Lands End to Milford Haven. W'ly F8-10,
On the wheel for dual watch as my relief was too sick. Got her up to 14 knots under mizzen and storm jib only.

Not a record breaker compared to others, but nonetheless very memorable as a 17yr old.

Re: Crookhaven to Kinsale

Five hours door to door.

Protracted periods of 16knts with an 18+ knot top speed.

Blaster reacher, Triple reefed main, Brown corduroy trousers.

We were enjoying a weeks cruise that went Ocean Village, Fastnet Rock, Crookhaven overnight (Great pub rotten holding), Kinsale day off, Swanage bay anchorage for a nap, Ocean Village.

Engine hours 9

I was keen in those days.

16.8 knots in a Sadler Barracuda in a F8 sailing from Littlehampton to Fecamp. The whole trip took 6.5 hours. Great sail if a tad wet.

The original boat was supposed to have surfed on its way to Scotland at near 25 kn ........... there was an article in one of the mags years ago - with a photo ... maybe YM. Of course it was long before she kept knocking her keel off !!!!

17.1 knts, 1.5 nm off Dover harbour in a Grand Soliel 43 with full main and genny, Wind SW 7-8 and the bloody autohelm steering, everytime I or owner took over the speed dropped off (dahhhh). Heading for Ramsgate via the Ramsgate channel, it's a bit shallow in places so I suggested taking down the main to bleed some speed off we went from 14 knts to 9, bloody hairy in a brand new boat, as the bottom there is solid and not sandy and the depth log reading 4 feet under the keel.
