So far only 10knts through the water in Aeolus, but also sailed a Dart 18 before that which was scarily fast, especially with a 16 stone lunatic hanging off the trapeze in a F6 - you can actually see the leward hull flexing sideways under the loads...

13.8 kts SOG, but that was just 7kts through the water, the rest was courtesey of the Alderney Race.

Vmax through water, a broad 7 Bft, with single reef and n°1 jib, 11 Kts surfing down a wave. Not bad for a 30year old half-tonner.

Re: Barracuda ....

Bearing in mind her age, have taken mine up to 15kts + without tide. She acts just like a Laser - goes up on the plane and everything starts to 'hum'.
Previous owner who had her from new said he had got up to 21kts with the keel raised etc etc.
Even at 16 years, still a bloody fantastic sail when the conditions are right . My personal best is c12kts all the way from Jersey to Chichester.

Re: A tad wet

SO can I take it from you that my new UULDB (!) at 4 tonnes on 40 feet will be dry? If so I might just cancel that Musto drysuit I was contemplating!

I see Mari Cha has upped the stakes - now 525 in 24 hours, 1020 in 48. To put in context - thats more than 1/3 of the Atlantic crossing in 48 hours - SHEET!

Re: A tad wet

Agree with the wet bit, until I put sealant in the hull deck joint had water inside everywhere which led to mould, fungi, buggered electrics etc. She had been like that since new.
Having sorted she is now dry and SHMBO (a non sailer) is quite happy to come along. Still a fantastic sail - which ones did you sail on?

125 kts in a glider whilst 'ridge bashing' 100' below the top of a hill in 30 kts of wind...

Or 135 MPH on a Honda 750...

Oh bugger, you mean in boats? Umm, 'bout 8 kts (hangs head in shame)

Re: A tad wet

I sailed one of the early GRP's on a charter. Eleven of us crossing the Channel in an eqinoctal gale. I think we were as fast as the ferries that night. Awesome stuff. Probably the best night's sailing I've ever had. The boat leaked like a sieve but we didn't care.

17 knots plus in a Mini Transat boat - gusting 50 knots!! We didnt keep our eye on the log as we where screaming up Chichester Harbour in a full storm at about low tide drawing nearly 2 metres!! Extreme! :) we seriously wiped out with reefed headsail and fully reefed main just off Itchenor and nearly took out a Conservancy patrol boat.

Re: Barracuda ....

I believe the boat in question doing the surf to Scotland was the original prototype timber / plywood job.

Later she was owned by 'jounalists' ----- kept dropping her keel off !!!! Not a fault of the yard - more the crew as I was told !!!

If I get past 5kn in my UK boat - she's flying !!!!

Tallinn 1/4 ton boat starts to hum at 6kn - gets quite musical !!!! At 10kn the mast vibrates - finally we had to rig a cutter stay to control it / channel it out !! Above that - well it's adrenaline !!!!

Todays bureaucratic killjoys....

Harbour speed limits - back in the 60's I sailed on a plywood Iroquois catamaran (the original prototype) and it had a brass plaque inside stating that it had been officially logged at 23 + knots INSIDE Dover harbour.......
those were the days.......

Westerly 33; great lumbering centre cockpit ketch. Mechanical log, with indicator going up to 12 knots, fastened to bulkhead. Came in on the run down the Needles Channel, got picked up by a wave and felt the boat accelerate. Remembered vaguely a story about a yacht being broached by just such a wave at just the same place, being flooded and sinking. Concentrated really hard on holding our boat dead straight, but was conscious of two jets of water coming out on either side of the bow, and of the speed meter being stuck on its stops for what seemed an interminable period. Quite pleased, really, when the wave broke into the cockpit and passed underneath us. But I would like to know what speed we were actually doing........

Re: Barracuda ....

Agree, not the yacht's fault if the skipper hits Gurard ledge and the boiler off the Needles. If you race in the surf on a lee shore in a gale off Fecamp also not the yachts fault when you end up wrecked on said rocks under Fecamp cliffs.

Re: A tad wet

If it was Gemma Lousia then its now my pride and joy. If not, then at least the lack of sealant in the hull/deck joint was not unique to my boat. Mind you, the whole thing is so flexi that that I still Jam the keel in the keel box if I wind the rig up to get anything like a tight fore stay in a beat to windward!

Re: Todays bureaucratic killjoys....

Hah! I was hauled up a long time ago by the Hamble harbour master for going too briskly in the river in a Cherub. We'd started from HRSC club line and were headed out to East Lepe or somewhere down that way - he didnt keep up on the way out, but had a 'quiet word' when we came ashore. I doubt we did more than 15 knots, but in a 12 foot dinghy it felt like 50!

Re: Todays bureaucratic killjoys....

I assume that was the NZ Cherub, the first of which were designed by John Spencer - if so you make me feel real old, 'tis 35 years since I sailed one of those! I think those years have gone by faster than anyone has gone on any sail boat too.

Regards

John
