FAR to dangerous to sail to France in boats less than 24ft

On a recent sail from Scotland to Northern Ireland in my 21'6" Drascombe Coaster I was pondering the fact that my Drascombe Scheme insurance this year now excludes the Channel and the Irish Sea.

It used to include the Drascombe cross channel rally but of course we cant do those now 'cos the French regulations apparently say that no boats less than 5 metres (Dabbers) are allowed more than 5 miles out and in addition to a lot of other stuff, any boat going more than 6 miles out has to carry a liferaft (apart from the cost, a liferaft on a Drascombe Lugger or a Coaster would be an impediment to sailing!) There is a Euro 1,500 fine for non compliance.

Soon (if the nannies have their way) the trip taken by the guy who recently sailed his Dabbber home to Hamburg, the Lugger trips to Australia and across the Pacific etc and even my little trip to Ireland could become criminal offences.

This is all getting ****!! ridiculous.

I thought I read in PBO this month it is 8 metres?

Do the French regulations apply to British boats?

I may be wrong but my understanding is that they apply to boats sailng out of French ports.

I thought it only applied to French registered boats. Like the challenge to the New Zealand regs some years back..visiting yachtsmen are now exempt I believe. How about all those Wayfarer sailors that often cross the North Sea?? People moan about the state of Britain etc etc but we still have so many freedoms that we take for granted.
