I'm interested in adjustable winch handles (short for speed, long for power) which I saw in the chandlers. I'd be interested to hear from anyone with experience of same.
Waste of money, IMHO of course. Well, for my kind of sailing at least (family). Tend to go for the longer ones - more power, bit less speed. But the wife and kids can handle them.
If, on the other hand, you're into racing and sail with a full complement of able bodied men & women, by all means go for it.
I reckon they would be a good thing. I have sailed on masthead rig boats where genoa is big and a lot of work. The 2 speed winch was mounted too close to the gunwhale such that in low range requiring a full rotation, the handle was too long in that this brought you out over the gunwhale so that a shorter handle would be better. Having said that you might find that 2 cheap handles one long and one short would cheaper better. I'd be interested to see an extendable handle. will
