I've been reading about exhaustelbow.com and how wonderful they are; I don't doubt it, but surely there is someone in the UK providing a similar service? Isn't there?

Someone on the forum was asking for old elbows a while back and I wondered if they were thinking about starting to produce them but I haven't heard anything since then.

I did some research before I ordered mine from Ben in the US and the photos on eBay looked like they had been welded with pigeon shit. If I were trying to sell those elbows I would not include a photo at all.

Elbow from Ben compared to "previously repaired" Yanmar original.

Richard,

Out of interest how have Ben's elbows performed, or is it too early to tell?

Yes, too soon. I installed them on both engines this week so all I can say is that they fit perfectly as a replacement for the original Yanmar elbows so all the dimensions must be spot on.

One thing I did notice was that the manifold gaskets I used last time I removed the elbows for cleaning and "repair" were metal film on one side and textile on the other side. I think these were genuine Yanmar gaskets but I didn't know which way round to fit them so just guessed metal side-to-elbow. The new gaskets supplied by Ben with the elbows were metal film on both sides so no guesswork involved. :)

One of the problems with elbows is the water is injected one side and in the past some have eroded at the bend where the exhaust flow drives the water against one point on the inside. Don't know if S/S is going to have the same problem, but Mermaid S/S elbow for my Ford injects the water into a collar surrounding the exhaust pipe, the flexi fits outside the collar.

The Yanmar ones have the same design. The failure mode on these is not corrosion, it is fatigue. Mine is explained at the bottom of this page http://coxeng.co.uk/metallurgy/fatigue/

An interesting explaination on that link. With my 2gm20, as per the instruction manual,I always gently warm up the engine gently at tickover for 3, usually 5 mins before using it, even then I do not immediately go to full power. When finished with the engine I let it cool down at tickover for 5 minutes. Before finally switching off I give the engine a quick burst of revs with prop disengaged, this appears to clear out soot particles. This procedure must be to reduce faults due to thermal differences.

That is pretty much standard advice for a diesel engine but will not affect fatigue of the manifold.

my original 2gm20 elbow looked fine but for peice of mine i bought one from ben too. yet to test it. looks good however, and received it fairly quickly. had to pay duty on it (£25 IIRC)

I had my 3gm30 elbow delivered to the hotel when on a short business trip to Pennsylvania. Well made item replaced a tired (more costly) Yanmar elbow.
No complaints , and it helped sell the boat!
