Ever regret going large?

Seriously considering an upgrade from 50ft to 60ft... love the potential new boat, but wanted the views of others who have upsized...

- Have you missed the ease of handling?
- Has the benefit of more space gone unrealised?
- Did you find it any harder to find a visitor's berth?

Just curious before I pull the trigger as to whether anybody has had upsizer's remorse...

Regards,

Yes, we regretted it although to be fair it was as much about the relocation from the UK to the med and the terrible service from Princess Mallorca.

We went from a Princess 42 to a 67.

The 67 was easier to handle than the 42.
The extra space was lovely.
In the Med visitors berths are hard to find in August at least. UK is a different story.

Happy to go into more detail if it helps.

Just sold our T51 to go bigger.
Does that answer your question?

On the handling front - personally, I found a smaller boat easier to handle but I do everything at ultra slow speed anyway - if you are going to crash do it slowly!!!

On the space front - SWMBO wouldnt be seen dead in anything smaller.

Never really had any trouble finding a visitor berth - did visit Carteret at the end of last year and we were (on paper) too big but they let us in anyway - the boat is actually 15.6m so we said 15m cos that was the largest the pilot said that they could take. They said lets call it 14.9m so there is an issue there I suppose - but they still let us in.

However, on a bigger boat when you get things right it is very satisfying and most of the time I get it right.

I cant imagine, why anyone would want anything bigger than 40ft, less course, if there's oodles of kids. Which is horrid, or loads of visitors, which is worse. Biggish cars are nice, but we would not buy a charabanc. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

We moved up 46 ft to 57, so similar jump to yourselves. Handling no probs even if just the two of us, if anything easier 'cos they put decent size bowthrusters on bigger boats.

Extra space is fab, you don't really need it for two of course, but with a few on board it makes everything much more comfortable.

We've moved to med so berthing is a problem at any size, but no more so at 60' than at 50'. In the UK however this would be my biggest concern, we always reckoned 50' was the biggest you'd want in Blighty 'cos so many places you have to raft, and there's not too many boats happy to have a 25 tonne 60' beast hanging off their bow cleats. Also quite a few harbours and marinas are not really set up for boats that size. Oh, and 60 footers are 20% harder to keep clean than 50 footers of course.

So if you're happy to cross a few potential destinations off your list for the extra comfort and sea keeping then go for a bigger boat, if not then its keepies for the 50 footer, all IMHO.

Hang on ! You only recently got the T50 didn't you ?
Your wife said that's why you couldn't drive it properly yet

Also isn't the T50 a fuel efficient marvel for it's size ?

However, I suppose taking others peoples comments into account and if money is NO object then go for it. You can always move back smaller again if negatives outweigh positives.

What's the potential new boat going to be ?

Did you see that georgous 20m Jongert MV in the marina about a month ago ? I tried searching it on the internet & could find out nothing about it. Big & wide but low (no flybridge). Go anywhere I would think.

It's not bad on fuel, but I've struggled to replicate the efficiency stated in the MBY test. Maybe I need to get something that is really thirsty just to gain some perspective...

I very much like the way the Pearl 60 is arranged and screwed together - but there's a psychological hurdle I need to overcome about spending THAT much on a boat. I fear if I overcome it, I'll be able to overcome it that much more easily in the future!

Blue hulled, Dutch steel cruiser look-alike? A but like a Vim Van Der Valk? Saw it tied up at the Millwood houses if so. Very nice.
