Crews have been called to a fire involving a Marina building, 50m x 20m, which is 75 per cent alight and 100 per cent smoke logged in the Blackwater Marina. Fire is spreading through ducting in the building, which is made of corrugated iron. Cylinders and chemicals are involved in the incident.
The incident initially involved six pumps, but at around 09:00 hrs, the officer in charge requested the attendance of an additional four pumps to assist in firefighting operations.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using four jets and four hose reel jets to tackle the blaze from outside the building for safety and to protect surrounding risk.
At 09:26 hrs, Assistant Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick, the officer in charge of the incident, has requested the attendance of the hose-layer from Hadleigh. More than 75 firefighters are now tackling this incident.
URGENT UPDATE: Residents living in Mayland, Steeple, Rodwell and Tillingham are being urged to close their windows and stay inside if at all possible. Although the smoke, which is toxic, is mainly blowing out to sea, there is a chance that it may spread to surrounding villages, so this is a precautionary measure.
At 09:45 hrs, ADO Fenwick reports that firefighting operations are being hampered by a severe shortage of water. The fire has now spread to a second building, measuring 75m x 50m. Collapse of the first building is imminent.
Update 10:04 hrs: Crews continue to be faced with severe water shortages and the fire has now spread to two portable buildings and four boats. Ten jets, seven hose reel jets and a ground monitor are now in use. Essex Police's helicopter is airborne assisting crews in identifying hotspots.
Update 10:56 hrs: Firefighting operations are still in progress. The main structure of the building has now collapsed. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are now using five hose-reels and five jets as operations begin to scale down.
A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident.

Can't they take it out of the creek?
Doesn't sound good. Must be vistually the whole of the marina that has gone by the sounds of it. Shame as it is a lovely creek. Hope that business survives, and there isn't too much boat damage.
Low Water - least it was a while ago, there won't be much water up by the marina - if anything. Also I thought the Police Helicopter was over us here because of the Bank Robbery on Mersea this morning! All just a bit too exciting this way for once.
This is the third fire at a sailing club/marina in Essex in the last two weeks. 14th May-Essex Yacht Club (some of the racks destroyed along with 20+ sailing dinghies - including my son's ! ) . One at the Burnham Sailing Club on 17th May and now this.
I don't know about todays fire but the other two were 'suspicious'.
Please tell me this is all a coincidence !
I know that it is very difficult to stop the mindless morons who do this kind of thing, but other clubs may want to look at their security and insurance cover.
1300: I live just downriver from the yard. The old sheds have some cement asbestos panels and the air has been thick with what I take to be asbestos fibre smuts and glass fibres. All windows closed and we are not going out to check! Anyway helicoptor has been over and told us to stay inside. Unbelievably folk are walking around and arriving by car in droves to look.
As far as I know an explosion occurred in the dust extraction system attached externally to the joinery factory in the main shed. The evacuatiion procedure worked perfectly and nobody has been hurt. There is however extensive damage with some boats also burnt.
We were about 3nm off Clacton at 0200 this morning, coming back from St Kats to Deben and smelled burning - after short panic realised it was coming from shore - must have been smoke from this carried on the S.Westerly breeze!
Good point. Does get a tadge muddy up there. What they needed was a longer pipe, and some boards to get it those extra few meters. Either that or some pumps that can slurry blast the fire!
I'm based at Blackwater Marina. Fortunately I moved out onto my swinging mooring at the weekend, so my boat should be OK. It's a real shame - the place is a proper boatyard.
