I wrote a blog recently titled "What is in a yacht delivery skipper's kit bag?". I posted a link to it on a sailing group in facebook and was extremely surprised that it quickly turned into a conversation about which hot sauce is the best... Lot's of criticism for the Tabasco!

For those interested, this is the article:

Any other suggestions of quirky or interesting things that you think could help when sailing long distances offshore?

Hopefully it goes without saying about the lifejacket, harness line, plb etc...

Sailing 'single handed' most of the time I take to flasks of hot coffee as boiling water at the stove in heavy seas is a no no to me!

Also spare plastic raw water intake pipe cut to length incase you get the raw water seacock valve blocked with sea weed, try getting the old one off after two years without
splitting it with a hack saw!

Also wood bungs next to the seacocks

I used to buy self heating cans of food like turkey fruit curry and the ilk!
One punctured the outer part of the tin and used the supplied spear. Allowed about 20 mins for the exothermic reaction to take place!
Bliss on a night watch!
I understand these are only available from specialist expedition food suppliers lately, no longer in popular Swindlerys?
A beer at sunrise was the big treat, a sort of rite of passage, much sniffed at by SWMBO.

Never go to sea without a few builder's rubble sacks. I've used them to:
Keep clothing dry.
Emergency sea boot.
Cover a badly bent fore hatch.
Keep deck leaks off my berth.
Shopping bag.
Etc, etc.

Wet wipes, plus a disposable bag to keep used ones in.

Ear plugs. Not for use at sea or when I am in charge, but essential in port or at anchor. Learned that at age 17 when I was sharing the forepeak of a handsome 70 footer with lots of sails, lots of spare lines, the anchor chain and a world champion snorer.

One thing that I won't ever take sailing or have on my boat is sleeping bags. If ever it should be necessary to get out quickly I don't want anyone (me or my crew) tangled up trying to get out of their bags. If anyone does bring one I ask that they use it unzipped and without an inner lining.

Coffee for me to.

My oh my, so much coffee!

A few years ago a boat came up from below me on a cross Channel race, well drifter really.
"May I ask what you are doing", I asked.
"You may", came the rely.
"I saw the Irish name and wondered if you could pass over a few spare cans of Guinness!"
I was happy to oblige :D
