Re: Erm! Where\'s the freeze?

It's not up here. (yet)
Came up the A9 to Inverness yesterday afternoon and the snow line was about 2000ft so the roads were completely clear and practically no trafic. The sun was even shining through at times.

The sky is even blue just now.

In the USA. Just got back from three weeks in Pennsylvania. One day it was minus 15c. And from that subtract windchill! That's equivalent to sitting in my freezer.

Positively Medditerranean here by comparison at +10, although we did have a slight frost last night.

Beginning to look like more WMD - weather, mass delusion.

Its currently +2deg C here on the bonnie Black Isle, overcast with a light W. breeze. The snowdrifts are currently 0 feet deep, with no sign of any improvement.

Re: No improvement

Latest forecast for Winchester area:

Temperatures set to plunge to -1C with blizzards giving falls in excess of half an inch - oooer!

Am I wrong in thinking this should be regarded as normal for this time of year not the subject of a severe weather warning with all papers forecasting doom and council highways departments being cross examined about their ice preparations?

Should we be invading Tescos and panic buying compo rations and Kendal mint cake?

Re: No improvement

Trouble is that last year 3 flakes brought the M11 to a total stand still and stranded drivers for over 24 hrs.

I think the press has been exagerating. I have seen nothing in weather forecasts to suggest that the daytime temperatures will be any lower than about minus 2 or 3 for most places. The figures of minus 14 I've seen quoted refers to the windchill not the actual temperature. That refers to how cold it will feel out in your birthday suite compared with a wind eqivalent to walking speed. Beware dedicated naturists though.

If the going gets rough I'm going to sleep in my bilge. According to our Norse correspondents it never gets much below zero.

Re: No improvement

Second time in two weeks. I was not aware that temperatures reaching the desperate lows of +2 or 3C daytime were anything but what we should expect under a Labour Government at this time of year, and plummetting to what? -3C! Its been a whole lot colder than that already in my back garden a couple of months ago....

and what about the 'violent storm' of 2 weeks ago? Driving to Gatwick early that monday morning the local radio was imploring us not to go out, not to go to work, watch out for high sided vehicles sailing all round the motorway etc.... "its REALLY dangerous out there at the moment" said some silly girl on Southern Counties Radio at 8.00am. The actual weather at the time? light rain, and wind speed slightly in excess of F2

And when the storm finally arrived, its peak wind speed? According to Chimet a deadly 24 knots on the highest gust!

Oh my! the British weather is getting really bad! Tonights blizzard may last all of 20 minutes, and leave 5mm of wet slush. I must get my Snow tyres out, and my arctic survival kit..... check my pipes are lagged, and phone the Police for a road report before i go and get the morning paper. Except it will not have reached the paper shop because the last remaining leaf has blown onto the railway tracks....

Re: Erm! Where\'s the freeze?

Huh, all the usual hype, just like the gales of a few weeks back. It's actually got warmer this evening in Taunton!

And even if it does snow, shock horror, snow and freezing temps in January, whatever next!
