Hi

I am in the Caribbean and have run out of Blakes seacock grease which is unobtainable here. Can any one recommend an alternative? Can I use Lewmar gear grease or a white lithium grease or a waterproof silicone grease?

Thanks

I'd be inclined to try that zinc based waterproof stuff you put on babies bums. Serious - it really does stick. Better than nthe proverbial as it happens.:D

I have never used Blakes grease on my toilet seacocks, but use the blue (I think it is Quicksilver) waterproof grease-in-a-tube from an outboard motor dealer.
I also use it on the O-rings for the log impeller.
Never had any leaks or jamming.

Oh dear - I should have checked.

ps Anybody want to buy 10,000 tubes of Sudocream and 10,000 labels reading 'Miracle New Marine Anti-Corrosion Grease'
I have always avoided taking my stop cocks to bits if they turn ok and dont leak . can you grease them without taking them to pieces?I fear not

I'd have thought more or less any heavy grease would do - it's not exactly a high-stress situation. I saw the price of the blakes stuff in my local chandlery and bought a tub of "Ramonol white grease" instead.

Irritatingly, I later found nearly-full tubs of both Duckhams Keenol and genuine Blakes grease tucked away in odd corners of the boat by the previous owner.

How do Ramonol, Keenol and Blakes compare in terms of "weight" (NLGI grade)?

Keenol always seemed a very light grease to me. Is Ramonol similar?

Is the Blake's stuff heavier?

I was given some by a "marine engineer" It wasn't blakes but worked very well. It was green, thick sticky and had a stringy consistency. Sorry don't know what it's called but there are alternatives. I had previously tried using Keenol but they leaked.

Not a clue - never even heard of NLGI :)

I didn't even open the Keenol, so I don't know how that compares. The Ramonol is really quite stiff, solid stuff. It says "seacocks" among other things on the tub, which is why I bought it as a substitute for Blakes.

I found it now.
Ramonol white grease is NLGI grade 2

I reckon Keenol would have been grade 1 and too light for seacocks. That tallies with what Spyro says above.
