I recently read an article that warned of 'the well known problem of using epoxy resin on oak'.

Unfortunatley the article did not expand on how the problem would manifest. Has anyone heard of this incompatibility between epoxy resin and oak? If so could they enlighten me!

Tannic acid in the oak reacts with the epoxy AFAIAA
Having said that a alkali wash of the rough oak followed by washing / neutralisation and drying. The surface of the oak to be bonded is better rough than smooth as in planed. The surface left by cutting on a band saw seems good / rough enough.

Thanks for that sixpack - good old tannic acid - wish I'd heard of it before finding out that the tannic acid from the oak used to rebuild the fin keel would attack the keel bolts too - hope it doesn't work too fast or its keel replacement number three in a few years!
