I have VMH charts on my android tablet with the marine navigator app running it and I quite like it. What would be great is if I could overlay AIS. MN have an upgrade that will enable this. Tablet has inbuilt GPS and WIFI.

I want to keep this as low cost as possible as, probably next year now, I'll be upgrading my chart plotter and other electronics but meanwhile - as I already have VMH and MN on the tablet.

What entry level low cost AIS receiver would be suitable? I just want a stand alone receiver unit with its own antennae that has GPS and can WiFi the info to the tablet and have it appear overlaid on the VMH charts.

Not considering transponder at this time, that will be next year, just getting a bit of visual AIS info onto the tablet to assist with navigation and collision avoidance should the weather suddenly dictate. Crusing ground is Thames estuary and there are a lot of ships charging about and when the fog and must closes in it can be a big hairy.

Thanks

How do you get the AIS onfo to the android? I have AIS from my VHF and was wondering how it could be sent to a tablet with vhm charts.

The Quark kit talked about above transmits the NMEA data via a Wi-fi link. You’ve already got the data, so you could use something like this https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/283526451116 Yaker Wi-fi Bridge to take the data from your radio, transmit it on a Wi-fi signal to your tablet.

I too have the Yakker wifi bridge to get my existing AIS data into the Marine Navigator app. Works well. Recommend.
