I've always done it pushed fully home, but two things have made me think it may be wrong:

[1] Now that I have fully drained the oil (see quoted thread below) I only get the correct reading after filling with 6 litres if I rest the dipstick on the pipe.

[2] The VP manual tells you not to screw in the dipstick when checking the saildrive oil.

I just discovered that the oil suck-out pipe does not reach the bottom of the sump on my MD22...

The VP manual tells you not to screw in the dipstick when checking the saildrive oil.

This is fairly standard (if not universal) with transmission oils, perhaps because screwing the dipstick home is so very time-consuming
With engine sump oil, my understanding has always been that the dipstick should be pressed home, although there will be some discrepancy, anyway, depending on the location of the dipstick and angle of installation.

The screwed in dipstick is a diffrent matter ITYWF.

I dont think I have ever needed the full specified volumes of oil to refill an engine to the correct level when doing an oil change. I'd be surprised if you need much more than about 5½ litres

The oil level at the dipstick will depend on the angle of the engine. I don't know about Volvo but Thornycroft state that when installing their engines the correct amount of oil should be put in the sump and the level then marked on the dipstick. So in that case it depends whether or not the installer pushed the stick down before marking the max oil level.
