I have a yanmar 3gm30f and I need to change the oil and filter again (I used synthetic oil when I did the change at layup). The boat is out of the water and I am wondering if the closed freshwater circuit will be enough to protect the engine if I run it to warm the oil prior to extraction. I would leave the saltwater pump inactive unless I have to arrange a cooling water supply.
Could this damage any other engine component.
TIA. T.

You will fry the exhaust system if you run for more than a few seconds without a water flow as well as probably wrecking the pump impeller

The exhaust hose will probably overheat long before the oil warms up.
If you are really convinced you need to change the oil, there is nothing stopping you doing it cold, it will just take longer.
You could always warm the sump with an electric heater?

Patience is a virtue. Just wait until after you have been launched. Then next time change it just before you are lifted and then the engine is left with fresh oil in whilst it is laid up.

You miss the point. Yanmar specifically outlaw the use of synthetic in the handbook.

The reason I asked was because the boat next to me had its engine running without water coming from the exhaust. This was with a Volvo engineer doing the stuff.
So I thought ‘what’s keeping it cool’ guessing the answer is Sweet Fanny Adnams!!!

It gets towed, so no problem there

Well then, not even enough usage to warm up the oil for extraction. You've just made a slight mistake with the oil. It's not as though you've used battery acid or nitroglycerine in there by mistake. Just leave it till you can change it with the least hassle.

Exactly, even if it is the wrong oil, it's doing no harm sitting in the sump.

I used synthetic in my 3 cyl Yanmar, Bruce Roberts boat and for the last 10 years I use fully synthetic oil in current my 45 year old Volvo MD11C, Macwester boat; synthetic oils are superior in every way. If you run the engine as you are suggesting, the exhaust system will get too hot very quickly.

I shall not be running it, I will change the oil cold.
You seem to be at variance with the other posters. I hope your good fortune continues. T.

My ford service manager maintains that fully synth is the best to use in most engines, but what does he know Eh
