I have a sabb diesel which is rigidly mounted, after returning from a recent cruise i inspected the engine and found that 4 engine mounting bolts have worked there way loose to rectify this i have bought some new bolts and nylock nuts, however the original bolts had sheeves between the engine block and mounting i have managed to retrieve some of them but lost others what can anyone recomend for making sure i dont overtighten the new bolts has to pull the engine out of alignment, also while i'm on, the flex coupling on the prop shaft has 4 bolts and they were also slack is it common for these to work loose ?

Suspect that the reason your flex coupling bolts are loose is that the engine is no longer in line, particularly if you have lost the shims. Assuming you are still in the water, would suggest that you remove the 4 bolts from coupling to engine and slide the shaft/coupling away& towards the engine. There is normally a lip that the coupling will slot into without ANY force if the unit is in line, if not you will have to do a little work to sort this. In all probability, it will be the coupling angle that will have moved, rather than the side to side. You will get a fair idea of what is happening, when you take the coupling bolts out, they should slide easily!.... Hope this Helps.... Tony W.

I have the same problem with my lump of iron and are about to remove the beds and mount on industrial resilient type. The cause of the bolts coming loose on the beds was traced to the bolts pulling up into the bearers. Bit of Pine glassed in when built in 1973, Should not complain after all these years,so I advise you to check the bearers and determine if this is your problem or not.
