Assuming both have a good service history, on a six year old boat, would you go for the one with

180 hrs (lack of use ?)
580 hrs (more regular use)

I'm guessing a min life of 4000 hrs on volvo d6 /

I don't think either of those hours would pull or push me one way or the other. I'd be more interested in the condition and service history than the absolute hours (see what I did there? :D).

Just a note on your 4000 hours. I suspect a marine engine given infrequent use and so on will last rather less than that.

I am looking at a 1400 hour boat at the moment with a 2600 hour generator and i am suitable put off!

It's not a V58 in Spain by any chance is it?

why? sounds like it has been used quite a bit rather than sat festering.

If its on out drives I would much prefer the lower hour boat. I think the design life on out drives is 1000h, some may last ok up to 2000h from what I am told.

Depends on the kg. s of the boat and how previous owner(s) are likely to have either --/---

1- ran it in its design "comfort zone " cruisng happily @ 3-3200 rpm or Less all day ( for few days the 180 ever went out :)
@ what ever knots 3-3200 rpm propels the boat ?

2- cos of too many Kg,s --fouling etc -thrashed them to inch or 1oC of excessive Exhaust Gas Temp for 90 % of the recorded hours ? --cos the last salesman and brochure said it was good for xyz Knots .

Just plain 180 vs 580 - -too many variables .

Where did you get that from? I'd be amazed if my (well maintained) outdrives suddenly turned to mush at 1000 hours.

I would back Jimmy up on that .
DIY ? -@ lowest poss £ pattern parts and similiar lubes ?
White van Man ? With above or genuine lubes / parts
Vp authorised service centre? . With correct lubes a following factory schedule s + parts

When I had mine 1st MoBo -new nothing at all about MoBo,s coming from rag n stick .
Local Yard did the maintenance a Vp approved dealer Arie D Boom
Example @ bellows every 2 y they removed the legs Monday Am took them into the engine shed -totally stripped -all the gears out measured , and any bits outside tollerance replaced + new seals etc Refitted Wed pm or Thur ?
Once saw a white van pull up to boat next door ."engineer " managed to change the bellows he brought -none vp originals
Without taking the legs off. Some sort of prop up and wiggle off ,squeeze on new , clamp and go -All done and dusted inside 2 hours ! -drives off .
Owner arrives next day to see new bellows on .
Sometimes the engineers would sea trail mine -no extra cost ( well guess built into job pricing ?)
Once they asked me to return a few days later after a few hrs to pop it in the slings -lifted adjusted something up and relaunched -sent me off .I think they changed a "cone " deemed worn @ strip down

So I concluded in 7-8 seasons they never let me down -not one un scheduled repair -sold it with 860 hrs and FSH by aVp agent .3 weeks it took from list to new German owner trucking it up to the Baltic .
Brooker Sunseeker.fr had to clear the boat and put all our stuff in storage --sold that Portofino 35 with Kad300's
3100 rpm was a happy 26/27 knot cruise never really went over 3200 .

Both are far too few hours to worry about for the years. Go with the one that has the nicest service history...... I absolutely would...

I couldn't agree more.

Besides, rubberduck, I am not sure about what you can check with VP D6 displays, but for instance in Caterpillar instruments one of the display pages shows the lifetime total and idle engine hours, together with the total and idle fuel burn.
The combination of these numbers gives a much better idea about how hard the engines were used, compared to total hours alone.

Looking forward to reading more about the whole boat where these engines are installed, all the very best for your search! :encouragement:

I got it from a Volvo Penta product manager and 2 of my authorized VP service centers. Ask yourselves how many drives reach 2000h without major work?
