Hi, I built a GRP Endurance 37. The hull was by Tyler of Kent.
I was advised by a race sailing instuctor in Cowes not to have a ketch. He was right, the extra rigging in the small cockpit was too much, not to mention the extra weight and expence. Peter Ibold the designer advised the mast to be steped about 18" aft of the ketches main mast.
The keel/balast is internal and I used lead and steel waste. This coupled with a folding prop and top quality sails made her sail like a witch.
The first regatta we sailed in Corfu we finished 20 minuits ahead of a 40 boat fleet so far ahead we were accused of motoring. We entered Corfu yacht club regatta next weekend and with an independant witness aboard and finished second over the water!!.
The secret is, top quality hank on sails, lead keel, folding prop and good deck gear.

>Such arguments are not new. Read Miles Smeeton for good descriptions of what happens when a heavy long keel boat trips over its keel. He was something of an expert as it happened to him twice.

The chance of a long keeler tripping over are approaching nil, unless you are in the huge waves of the Southern ocean which Smeeton was.

Hi KellysEye,

You hit the nail on the head, Miles boat was heavy/very heavy wood with a long wood bowsprit. The grp Endurance 37 is a ULDB in conparison.

I agree the chances of a pitch pole capsize in northern waters is almost zero.

I have to say I've read "Once is enough" numerous times, what a great book and what a great family. I advise all to read it.
