my much-loved Emsworth Lugger was stolen recently. I had her bespoke built in around 2002 when John Young/Dorado was operating out of the old yachtyard to the north of Bosham for a short while, but I have no record of the purchase at about £3000. My insurers want some corroboration of this value.
I told them that an off-the-peg Roach Dinghy - very nearly as good as an EL, I expect we will agree - now sells for £3500, but I am going to have to convince these insurers nevertheless, by bombarding them with comparables.
Please.... Did anyone out there buy their Emsworth Lugger in the early noughties?...for about £3000?

i just had my much-loved Emsworth Lugger stolen a couple of months ago. Now my insurers seem to be quibbling the value. I bought mine in around 2002 for £3000.....did anyone else out there buy one over ten years ago? I have pointed my insurers to a Roach Dinghy now new at £3500, but they want convincing. Can anyone chime in with "yeah, me too.." kind of thing, that I could quote? John Young/Dorado moved away a year or two later and i have no records - insurers hate that. For my part I would rather have the boat back but slim chance of that.

Why is the new price relevant?
Your insurance should be at today's value?

Google shows a few shiny but older ones having been advertised in the past for just under £1k.
Once a boat is over 15 years old, value tends to be as much about condition as age?
My guess is that your insurer has done the same google search as I have?
Of course they don't do this before cashing the cheque for the premium.
Maybe your best bet is to look for boats of comparable nature for the kind of value you attach to your boat?
Perhaps these couple of Lymington Scows? Being of similar size and style..

Also you could try the CVDRA who might know what these boats change hands for, or even find you one for sale?
Maybe others can suggest better comparisons?
All these things are 'worth' what somebody will pay for them. Which is not really defined in a small market.

I'd wish you luck in getting your boat back, but after a couple of months it's not hopeful.

Was it a marine policy - I thought they normally worked to Value written in to the contract? If it's a household cover or similar policy then you should have the right to be "made whole". This means put back into the position you were before the theft rather than paying for a new boat. It gets complicated when you have a specific boat that's not available any more though - basically you can expect the pricing to be based on something similar so you need to identify what it is that makes your boat have a replacement value that is in excess of that of other 9' GRP sailing dinghies of the same age. A VERY quick look though boatsandoutboards suggests about £2000 is typical high end replacement value but that is a really quick glance.
