help! we have fitted recon engines to our boat, but are having trouble with the wiring..when the engine starts the voltmeter shows a discharge and the tacho, oil, and temp gauges are not registering. the lights on the gauges work as does the engine stop, and the engine starts fine. any advice will be appreciated, we seem to have exhausted our brains...the alternator is new...the engines are ford Di's..please.any experts out there?thanks

sounds like the connections are wrong. to find out which ones go where, disconnect the coolant temp, oil press(electric?) and the alt sensing. with the ign on, ground the engine end to the engine block... this will give a "full scale" reading for the appropriate guage, and make the connection to the sender units respectively. make sure you have a decent earth connection, as it'll try to draw earth thu' the cables etc.

the spare one should then be the alt sensing for the tacho.

good luck.

Is it as simple as crossed wires? Could account for a negative volt reading and no rerading on gauges.
